Book Description

March 6, 2010
Poetry. Edited by Ester Sobin, Andrew Joron, Andrew Zawacki, and Edward Foster. "Gustaf Sobin's poems, whose principal heaven is a dawn field in Provence, have always traced a path to the Absolute. His work, which finally must be ranked with that of Celan and René Char, causes language to exceed its own condition. Here, words find their true home in exile, a caesura accurately, & exquisitely, measured in lines indistinguishable from musical notation. Indeed, Sobin plucks a music beyond hearing from the strands of a fallen world, & so perfects the art of making 'manifest omissions'"—Andrew Joron.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Gustaf Sobin is sui generis, one of the deep figures of recent times. He is one of our dark and scintillating stars, his poetry a gift to our art now when there is a dearth of beauty and of myriadness of intelligence. --Michael McClure

I can't think of anyone in our time who has trod the via negativa so determinedly and with such purpose. The texture of the ground, but also the grain of what lies beneath it. And so, the miracle, as Oppen would say, that there is a music in all this, in all this nothing, our brief glimpse. --Michael Palmer

The expatriate American poet Gustaf Sobin is a national treasure. --Rain Taxi

5.0 out of 5 stars A pick for anyone who can't get enough of poetry, May 4, 2010
This review is from: Collected Poems (Perfect Paperback)
Sometimes you don't seek to write on a general theme, just write for the sake of writing. "Collected Poems" is a massive collection from Gustaf Sobin as he collects his life's work on the subject in a single half-thousand page tome. A great variety of work, "Collected Poems" is a pick for anyone who can't get enough of poetry. "Psalmodic": knelt there, in that/knuckle of/rock. nothing's/less than the word, brittle/as//crumbs, not/even the wind, what's/rising-- gentian -- just now,/be-//fore you.
