5.0 out of 5 stars More than just stories - A lifetime of ADVENTURE!
There is more to this book than just the old pulp fiction. It has interesting stories about Louis own life and adventures. While the adventure stories are action packed and thrilling there are also several higher quality tales where the writing is at least as good a Louis' novels if not occasionally better! 5.0 out of 5 stars More than just stories - A lifetime of ADVENTURE!, October 31, 2006
There is more to this book than just the old pulp fiction. It has interesting stories about Louis own life and adventures. While the adventure stories are action packed and thrilling there are also several higher quality tales where the writing is at least as good a Louis' novels if not occasionally better! There are also many poignant stories about Louis' personal life and the world he experienced as a young man traveling the globe. Much of the book follows Louis' early travels to places like China, Japan, Indonesia, and Europe.

There is also a web site just about this book (LouisLAmourGreatAdventure) which offers loads of additional materials including maps, film and sound clips, detailed mock ups of ships and airplanes etc, all related to the stories, adventures and life of my favorite author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting collection of short stories, May 7, 2007
I bought this to take on vacation, although it is rather heavey to carry through airports. I have only read the first few stories, however they are filled with drama and intrigue that take you to strange lands. So far they are filled with adventure and I look forward to spending more time with these stories. I would guess that Louis L'Amour westerns would be equally exciting.

The problem with requesting this review is the time lapse between ordering/receiving the item and your request for a review. At the time I ordered this book I ordered several from various other places so was receiving several books during the same period. I didn't realize Amazon required a review on their deliveries or I would have submitted one as soon as the book was received. At this late date I can't give other than a three-star since I don't remember how quickly I received the book. Sorry.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, October 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
this is not one of his western type books ,, i don't know what you would call it. so if you are expecting a western you'll be disappointed. though a couple of the books in here are ok he should have stuck with westerns. if you can preview this book before buying.

This review is from: The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour: Unabridged Selections from the Adventure Stories: Volume 4 (Audio CD)
My review is of the hardcover large print book NOT the audioCD....Amazon got it wrong.

I'm a big fan of the late great author Louis L'Amour. I read 8 of his western novels, almost all 5 stars, The Lonesome Gods, The Walking Drum and the Haunted Mesa ( his only sci fi), The Last of The Breed, all 5 stars....see my reviews. Many believe Louis was a world class western writer only( he did write a lot of them) but he was much more....a total author.

Here is a superb collection of short stories written by L'Amour across decades of writing. All were excellent and I enjoyed them all. What impressed me most with this collection was the diversity of the stories. Many different subject maters, great characters and various times in history. Also you can tell L'Amour actual visited several of these worldwide places, worked in some of the jobs and did a lot of historical research to add to accuracy to some of his fiction.

Some of the shorter stories can be read in 20 minutes,so are great to read while getting an oil change or waiting for a doctor or dentist visit. Some of the stories are longer and take a few hours. Stories about the US depression era, pre WW2 and WW2 commercial shipping tied into German and Japanese expansion attempts, far east adventure, South American jungle adventure and more. Sea captain heroes, sea plane heroes, lost cities of gold in the jungles, beautiful women, lots of fighting, double crossing spies and much much more. Lots of action brought to you very quickly as they are short stories.

Here is a collection opposite to the many westerns he wrote. There are no US wild westerns in this large collection.

Take your time reading this collection. Enjoy it. Pace yourself and enjoy a story or two/day. That way you can enjoy reading this large collection 1137 pages a long time. I liked this book so much I'll be getting as many of his other short story collections used at reduced prices that I can afford plus more of his novels.

Like Louis said on page 1135..."I'd like to be remembered...as a storyteller. A good story teller." INMO he was an EXCELLENT story tell...one of America's best. 5 stars and recommended.

It's a collection of louis l'amour's short stories, often featuring his characters found kicking around the pacific before and during WWII, either as a ship's captain or an aviator. Good entertainment and worth owning.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Collece Short Stories of Louis L'Amour, Volu 7, January 27, 2011

I ordered this as a used copy. In the mail i received the short stories VOLUME 4. If you take time to read the reviews you will see most are writing about VOLUME 4. Be certain you ask the seller if you will be receiving VOLUME 7 if you should order second hand. i was upset that I received the wrong volume and was told that I could return it. I was more upset that no one took any notice when I told them, Amazon and the seller, that the 4th Volume was being sold under the used heading of the volume I actually wanted---VOLUME 7!!
I see that the problem has not been altered since I wrote my letters to them both. My advice: contact the seller to be certain you will be receiving what you order.
