Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

West, who died in 1984, was a prolific and varied writer of autobiography, poetry, operettas, essays, science fiction, screenplays, and novels. These 38 short stories, some of which have not been collected previously, are testament to an accomplished literary career. Here there is romance, suspense, Californian farceall exhibiting a good sense of story telling. Often the stories are slight amusementsa school janitor battles for the right to wear a suit styled like that of a problem student; a softball announcer calls the plays before they occurbut there are other, more serious pieces. "Home-Coming" recaptures the agonies of the "inmates" of a sanatorium in a style as moving as it is timely. A collection that exemplifies West's own words: "Fiction reveal truths that reality obscures." Peter Bricklebank, English Dept., City Coll., CUNY
