St. Teresa of Avila is a great writer of the spiritual life, especially regardingg prayer and striving for mystical union. I liked that the book conatins a few of her writings in one book, especially when you want to cross-reference when you read and study her works.

The ICS have published a number of books on the great Carmelite saints including John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Edith Stein, and Elizabeth of the Trinity. These works are very carefully edited and also contain many helpful introductions, footnotes and other information for those of interest.

Teresa of Avila is one of the only four women saints to have received the title 'Doctor of the Church.' The title is appropriate in the case of this towering genius of Christian spirituality. Her works on prayer, mystical theology and the interior life remain classics even several centuries after they were composed. It is all the more remarkable this woman of great intelligence and insight, but little formal education, is able to communicate on spiritual matters in such a humorous, lively, witty and approachable manner. Her writings are perhaps among the best since Augustine and Meister Eckhart, who had a gift of communicating matters of deep contemplation in a way a person on the street can understand.

Teresa's best works (Interior Castle/Way of Perfection) are included in this volume. It includes her teachings on the seven 'castles' of the soul, the four 'waters' of prayer (also to be found in her beautifully written 'Life.') and the prayer of quiet/union.

Her teachings and writings form a useful balance to the more austere teachings of St John, and are a relief in the sense the contemplative life does not have to be one of strict penance and asceticism (though she does not water down the demands of the Gospel or the Carmelite way in her writings). She remains a great teacher of the church and the ways of spiritual life today.

Excellent - Although I have a hard copy of the text, using the Kindle version was fast and an efficient way of reviewing the work.
