Product Description

Before the late 1960s, few museums or collectors acquired photographs or considered the medium as an art form. The moment arrived, however, when photography’s profile ascended and the medium began to gain widespread acceptance in the art world as an art form engaged with issues that were central to contemporary art. This was precisely the moment of greatest growth for the collection presented here. This catalogue publishes for the first time the 548 photographs in the Norton Simon Museum of Art collection, more than 90 per cent of which were acquired during that fascinating moment of transition in the history of photography, 1969 to 1974.

In The Collectible Moment Therese Mulligan outlines the character, quality, and importance of the Norton Simon collection, and Gloria Williams Sander explores the history of the Museum’s photography department in the context of the local art organizations in general and community of photographers specifically. First-person recollections by a number of important figures in the world of photography provide immediate and vivid accounts of the period and the photo artists of this important historical moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, January 10, 2007
By E.W. (Vermont, United States) - See all my reviews
This book is a monument to some of the greatest photographic talents that have existed! The reproductions are very good. If you didn't see the exhibit at the Norton Simon Museum (of which this book was created), or even if you did see the exhibit I highly recommend this book! Anyone who is a photographic student should most certainly take a look at the work of some of the geniuses whose work is included in the exhibit, study them well. Anyone who does will learn more about photography than they would from the best university in the world!!! If you are a collector of fine art photography this book is a great guide!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Collectible Moment, May 7, 2007
Before I purchased this book I went to Pasadena to see the exhibit. I was very impressed with the large number of Edward Weston and Manuel Alvarez Bravo photos shown. Almost one-third of the book consists of reflections with photos by artists, curators and critics which contributes greatly to the book. If you are one of Weston's or Bravo's admirers you will not be disappointed in this book.
