Editorial Reviews

Review

This 160-page softbound book is devoted to the sniper variations of the Model 1903 Springfield including versions with the Warner & Swasey, Winchester A5, Lyman 5A, the Unertl 7.8x and the Weaver M73B1 telescopic sights. It concentrates on the [identifying features] of the rifles and their scopes. In addition to five meaty chapters, this volumes features five appendices, seventeen tables, and a dozen sidebars. It is lavishly illustrated including many close-up views of specific features, plus a full-color page of the of the four basic Model 1903 sniper rifles. For collectors or devotees of World War I and II military history, this is a great book to have on your reference shelf. In fact, it may be the only one of its type. --Larry S. Sterett, Gun Digest/The Guns Magazine

I collect all 1898 Mauser rifles and their clones. Most of them are M 1903 Springfield rifles (I love them!). I never bought a sniper version as faking is such a big problem and has been since the 1960's. Now I am looking for and preparing to bid on US M 1903 Springfield sniper models. (I would die for a USMC original w/ Unterl scope) but now realize they are VERY rare due to the USMC's former incredibly frugal use of our tax dollars and making use of what they had.

This is a very informative, entertaining, and visual book for the collector or casual student of small arms. It is very broad and covers many rifles (Krag, M 1903, M 1917, Garand, (even) the Ross, scopes, silencers and history of US arms used in sniping from before the Revolutionary War).

NEVER buy a US sniper rifle without reading this book. Take it to the gun shows and refer to it before auctioning. On top of everything else it is entertaining!

My best recent book addition (and my rifle, ballistics, African hunting library conatins 700+ books!)

Not 100% thorough information on every sniper weapon of our armed forces but nevertheless, quite informative and appetite whetting. Enjoying it.

I bought this book expecting that perhaps the Garand M-1 rifle variants would also be covered, since the Garand was used in WWII and various sniper variants were developed. However, it covers only the US Bolt Action rifles. Why then did I rate it as 5 stars? A friend who is interested primarily in the 1903 bought it and says that not only are the pictures and illustrations extraordinary, the text provides information he has not seen in other books on the topic. So if you are a fan of the US bolt action sniper rifles of the period, this is the book for you! One might note that the cost is less than many other texts on the same subject.

The book was excellent in the coverage of the 1903 sniper variants and the optics used with them. However, it did not include significant information on M1 Garand sniper rifles. So, it really should be called American Sniper Rifles 1900 to 1936. The coverage of even earlier sniper rifes and the Ross was very interesting. Everything that Poyer writes is worth reading, so I was hoping that he would also cover the Garand C and D series.
