Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- This once leisurely childhood activity has turned into a billion-dollar-a-year business. Owens gives practical advice concerning tricks of the trade for youngsters who want to get started or novices looking for ways to improve upon or give focus to their collections. He provides a history of baseball cards, and discusses how to buy wisely, protect the cards, specialize, and avoid being taken advantage of when making purchases. Photographs, mainly full color, of various cards over the years serve as illustrations. The final chapter lists the major publications devoted to collecting and addresses of card companies and all the major league teams. While not a price guide, which seems to be the hot-ticket item in libraries, the book contains clear and accurate information, similar to that found in Plaut's Start Collecting Baseball Cards (Running Pr, 1989), and won't become as quickly dated as the price guides do. --Tom S. 5.0 out of 5 stars Color photos throughout display vintage cards, April 28, 2001
It would be a shame to limit Thomas Owens' Collecting Baseball Cards to the young audience it was written for: many an adult collector will find this the perfect introduction to baseball cards, using easy language to explain how the cards are graded and what determines their value. Color photos throughout display vintage cards.
