Book Description

January 1, 2000
"Let There Be Light." Borrowing from the bible, the Eveready Co. used this phrase on the cover of its 1899 catalog, along with a hand from the heavens pointing a flashlight at the earth. Those were the beginning years of the flashlight, originally promoted to help sell batteries and growing to become an essential safety product in every American household and automobile. Never before has there been an extensive treatment of the flashlight from an historical and collectible point of view. In this beautifully illustrated full color volume, Stuart Schneider brings a fascinating world to "light." With flashlights ranging from the purely practical to the elegantly stylish, to the playthings of children, the reader will begin to appreciate the beauty of their design and their inventiveness. 458 color photographs illustrate the book, each accompanied by an informative caption and the value of the model in today's market. Histories of many companies and important information for collectors is also included.

More About the Author

Stuart Schneider lives just outside New York City. He is an accomplished photographer who currently scouts cemeteries in the day and sees and senses what is there. He returns at night to capture his images. One out of a hundred have something unusual, most do not. The color photos are evocative and draw you in as if you are actually standing there and seeing what the photographer saw and felt. These are not the typical orb or streak-type ghosts that ghost hunters often get, but full formed, vaporous apparitions. He has visited haunted cemeteries throughout the world. His latest books, "Ghosts In The Cemetery" and "Ghosts In The Cemetery II, Farther Afield" are best-selling works, melding storytelling, photography, and beautiful imagery together.
My other books cover the field of antiques and collectibles and fluorescent minerals. The photography is professional-grade. If you want to see what he is describing, the photographs easily show you. The different fields that I cover are a bit offbeat. My publisher asks me if anyone will buy (ie. Halloween In America) and I say yes (what else would I say?). Now, many of the books are in their 2nd and third editions, so people are buying them and saying nice things about them. If you want to delve further into my experiences, visit my website at wordcraft.net. I write what I am interested in and try to share my information with all my readers. Stuart

5.0 out of 5 stars New Collector, May 24, 2002

This review is from: Collecting Flashlights (Paperback)
I saw this guy on Martha Stewart with part of his collection of old flashlights and they were incredible. It got me to start a modest collection and I bought the book. Wow! I am amazed at the variety of different flashlights for collectors. Gotta have this book if you like to travel in dark places.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for an Item We Take for Granted, August 8, 2011

This review is from: Collecting Flashlights (Paperback)
I don't collect flashlights, but I bought the book just to see how such a simple thing we take for granted has changed over the time. I learned a lot and even bought a nice old Pre 1925 Eveready based on this book. My only criticism (small one at best) is that there aren't too many imported versions which I started to see a lot when I was kid and some of the new retro styles from the past outfitted with LED lamps instead of light bulbs like the Eveready 2-AA Pen light aren't mentioned. The author has a pretty nice a essay on the origin of Maglite which I see alot but knew nothing about how it began. If you like flashlights and the history this is a grteat book and maybe the only one available to the mass market available that provides an in depth look at this item.
