4.0 out of 5 stars Geneology of Upstate South Carolina - nicely done, July 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical and Family Records Volume I (Hardcover)
A LOT of good data for anyone reseaching this area of the country, or just wanting to know about the families of the region. A full description of the book itself was written by "bookmomma77" on eBay. I found the book very useful for understanding the relationships of the "founding families" of this part of the country. As a transplant to Upstate SC, I found it very useful to learn and know the history of the ancestors of people still living here. Some of my newly found friends are the latest part of this history and the convention of using one of the last names as a first name is quite prevelent here. I always ask them if they were named after the streets... :)

"Bookmama77" (an eBay non de plume) writes (and I edited): A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical & Family Records, Volume One, as edited by James E. Wooley c. 1979, Published in 1980. Hardcover as new condition, attractive "rust" with black highlighting the gilt lettering, [6x9], 416 pages, INDEXED! What is this book? Hmmmmm. This is just a great book, bid on it. (Very big grin). Ok, "these records comprise the loose files of the late Pauline Young, one of South Carolina's most widely know genealogists' on Upper South Carolina. Each family record is filed with names of persons mentioned. These records include: * Estate Settlements * Bastardy Bonds * Deeds * Wills * Coroner's inquests (fun stuff) * Abstracts of letters pertaining to estates, guardianships, tavern licenses, etc It is estimated that each book in this series contain more than 40,000 names of early settler in Upper South Carolina from the mid 1700's down to the 1850's. These records are primarily from counties such as: Pendleton District Abbeville Edgefield Greenville Pickens The print is very legible, though small. A lot of data is packed on these pages. In Volume III you're gonna find the exact same words as this one (sorry to be boring, fingers get tired). However, each index will be abstracted individually (YEAH), on to it... Surnames: Abbett * Abbott * Abney * Adair * Adams * Addis * Agnew * Albertson * Alexander * Allen * Allgood * Anderson * Armstrong * Arnold * Arter * Atkins * Atkinson * Austin * Bailey * Baker * Baldwin * Balentine * Ball * Banks * Barker * Barksdale * Barnes * Barrett * Barton * Baskin * Bates * Beaty * Belcher * Bell * Bellotte * Bennett * Benson * Berry * Bickley * Birdsong (yeah!) * Black * Balassingame * Boggs * Boon * Bowen * Boyd * Bradley * Brseale/Breaseale * Briggs * Brooks * Brown * Bruce * Burch * Burdine * Burgess * Burton * Cain * Caldwell * Calhoun * Campbell * Cannon * Cantrell * Capehart * Caradine * Carson 8 Carter * Case * Chambers * Chandler * Chapman * Chappell * Chiles * Clark * Clayton * Cleveland * Cobb * Collins * Conner * Cook * Cooper * Cox * Craig * Crawford * Crenshaw * Cunningham * Daniel * Darnal * Darracott * Davis * Devenport * Dickson * Dill * Dobbins * Drennan * Durham * Eakin * Earle * Easley * Easter * Eaton * Eddins * Edens * Edwards * Ellenburg * Elliott * Ellis * Ellison * Elrod * English * Erwin * Eubanks * Evans * Farr * Fennell * Ferguson * Field/s * Findley/Finley * Folger * Foosbee * Ford * Foster * Fowler * Fraser/Frazier * Freeman * Gaines * Galphin * Gantt * Garner * Garrett * Garvin * Gassaway * Gibson * Gilbert * Gilstrap * Glenn * Gordon * Gossett * Graham * Grant * Gray * Green * Griffin * Grisham * Hagood * Hall * Hallum * Hamilton * Harbin * Harris * Harrison * Hawthorne * Haynes * Hays * (1 mention Phil Hazle) * Henderson * Hendrick/s * Hester * Hill * Hodges * W.E. & R.E. Again, courtesy of bookmomma77 on eBay...

There are two other volumes, the contents of which I have not read or reviewed...
