Indeep Saved My Life!,

I just acquired this album, and may I say, it not only rocks, it rolls and swings and boogies! Every song on this album is killer. I don't know why I didn't hear more about this group in the '80s! Of course 'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life' is a classic, and there other Chic-inspired cuts. But there are also hip hop, freestyle and euro influences on this album, and it even ends with a bunch of sound effects used in the songs. Get this album, and your party will be a PAR-TAY!

What the hell is this mess?,
By Glen Zimmerman "RealMenDriveFords" (Lindenwold, New Jersey) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)

Since I'm a huge disco fan, I was excited when I found this collection by Indeep, because I'd never heard anything other than their one big hit "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". Well, after listening, I could still probably say that that's all I've heard from them. EVERY song has the same guitar riff with a note or two slightly changed, and weak, uninspired singing that, in each case, seems to be patterned after that one song. And what exactly was the point of including 10-second snippets of meaningless noises like a toilet flushing and tires screeching. Avoid this and just find a disco collection that has the 1 song. There are lots of them out there.

Indeep - Producing The Last Great Disco Song?,

Indeep had the last great Disco song with "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". I would include Lipps, Inc.'s "Funkytown" as well, but "...DJ..." was issued later. Overall, this album is not very good. Most songs are weak with no hooks and seem all over the map in their execution, despite the band having great vocalists and great overall beats. HOWEVER, there are two masterpieces, one being the aforementioned absolute-classic "DJ" and the other being "If You Want It". DJ is obviously incredible and is the band's only hit. But "If You Want It" has great wistful vocals, a driving beat, and an excellently placed sax riff/hook. It's a track that should have been a massive radio hit. The only other good track on this compilation is "When Boys Talk"---it's catchy-as-all, funky, supremely danceable, and contains sassy vocals---all behind a driving dance beat. The bass in this song is PERFECT. The only problem is the synth-beat goes on too long at the end---but if you cut about a minute-30 off the song, it would be perfect. So these three songs are the "hits" (in my book) on this comp-album. I thought the attached sound-"songs" at the end were a fun touch and are actually better inclusions than some of the songs!! Indeep should have been a THREE-hit wonder!!!!!
