5.0 out of 5 stars Indeep Saved My Life!
I just acquired this album, and may I say, it not only rocks, it rolls and swings and boogies! Every song on this album is killer. I don't know why I didn't hear more about this group in the '80s! Of course 'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life' is a classic, and there other Chic-inspired cuts. But there are also hip hop, freestyle and euro influences on this album, and it...

1.0 out of 5 stars What the hell is this mess?
Since I'm a huge disco fan, I was excited when I found this collection by Indeep, because I'd never heard anything other than their one big hit "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". Well, after listening, I could still probably say that that's all I've heard from them. EVERY song has the same guitar riff with a note or two slightly changed, and weak, uninspired singing that,...

Well, after listening, I could still probably say that that's all I've heard from them. EVERY song has the same guitar riff with a note or two slightly changed, and weak, uninspired singing that, in each case, seems to be patterned after that one song. And what exactly was the point of including 10-second snippets of meaningless noises like a toilet flushing and tires screeching. Avoid this and just find a disco collection that has the 1 song. There are lots of them out there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Indeep - Producing The Last Great Disco Song?, July 15, 2010

Indeep had the last great Disco song with "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". I would include Lipps, Inc.'s "Funkytown" as well, but "...DJ..." was issued later. Overall, this album is not very good. Most songs are weak with no hooks and seem all over the map in their execution, despite the band having great vocalists and great overall beats. HOWEVER, there are two masterpieces, one being the aforementioned absolute-classic "DJ" and the other being "If You Want It". DJ is obviously incredible and is the band's only hit. But "If You Want It" has great wistful vocals, a driving beat, and an excellently placed sax riff/hook. It's a track that should have been a massive radio hit. The only other good track on this compilation is "When Boys Talk"---it's catchy-as-all, funky, supremely danceable, and contains sassy vocals---all behind a driving dance beat. The bass in this song is PERFECT. The only problem is the synth-beat goes on too long at the end---but if you cut about a minute-30 off the song, it would be perfect. So these three songs are the "hits" (in my book) on this comp-album. I thought the attached sound-"songs" at the end were a fun touch and are actually better inclusions than some of the songs!! Indeep should have been a THREE-hit wonder!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Was here and alive in the 80s, July 28, 2003

Anyone who wasn't here in the 80's can't appreciate this collection. Which is why some county boy can't hear what's there. The artists aren't trying to croon, but have a bit of fun with some funky base licks. The best part of the collection is it's innocence in lyrics and musical drive. Simply close your eyes and dance or listen to the lyrics and laugh. SC boy stick with Bobby Womack, which also is a great artist for what he sings. Keep it all in prospective.

YECCHH! This was a classic example of everything that was WRONG with R&B in the 80s. These songs are simply BAD BAD BAD (and not "bad" meaning good). Too much synthesizer, the girls really could not sing, and some INCREDIBLY stupid songs and lyrics. The problem is that so much of the music was so bad at the time that you don't know whether to take it seriously or not.

Oh yeah, the songs. "The Record Keeps Spinning" is filled with repetitive hooks and bad singing (although the chourus has a nice moment or two). "Buffalo Bill" describes description. The chorus 'Make em bark-make 'em scream girls" is accented by outrageous sound effects to drill the point in the hole! Take this one for target practice at the rifle range! But the defining moment on this CD is on "Last Night a DJ Saved my Life" when the male voice sings 'and away your troubles down the drain" and a toilet flushes. That sound effect sums it all up well.
