4.0 out of 5 stars soul with a twist, October 16, 2005
This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
Laurnea' is the type of original artist for people tired of "cookie cutter" genre artists that dominate the music scene today. Her music spans soul, hip-hop, jazz, singer-songwriter r & b, electronica and more but it's all held together by her great voice which can be both sexy/breathy and hard/energerized.
The thing is, most of her cd's have been really hard to get unless you wanted to pay big money for a Japanese import. But now this cd, the aptly-named "Collection" bring together a a bunch of great tracks from her entire solo career, including "Can't Let Go" and "Infatuation", which got some play off her great solo debut cd. It's the perfect way to get into this talented sister's music and positive message.

This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
A friend of mine had this cd in her car and Whoa what a great voice and songs Laurnea has. I ordered the cd the very next day. Seems she's got a bunch of cd's out, but most of them are very hard to find, or expensive imports, but this cd grabs all the best songs from her other albums and adds a couple of brand new ones. She certainly deserves to have a huge fan base as the songs on this cd are better than anything I've heard on the radio in ages. If you like soul or neo-soul, with classic melodies and a pop sensibility and accessability, yet want something a bit unique this is a cd that I guarantee will spin in your cd player for years to come. Every song is fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super Erotic Jazz/Funk/Slow Jams, October 4, 2005

Laurneá: The Collection
Super Erotic Jazz/Funk/Slow Jams

I belive that this is Laurneá's 5th CD and appropriatly enough it's primarily a compilation of the other four, plus 2 new songs. I think this is a great way for today's indie artists who often come out with a new CD every year to get folks caught up with them, who have come "late to the party". Of course Laurneá is hardly an "new artist", she was formerly with Arrested Development, Loose Ends and Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra so while she has been around for a while, not many people know her name or if they do, they don't realize that she's a solo artist that has built up quite a portfolio of nice songs.

Although this CD is a compilation, it doesn't sound like one. It sounds like an album concived and planned from end to end as a concept album about the up's and downs of modern day relationships for today's Black women. In other words if you were to think of this album as being used for a movie that was a long form version of the TV show "Girlfriends", you would be "right in the grooves of this album" (oh I forgot those went away with LP's....lol). This is the type of album a brotha might put on in order to properly demonstrate to a lady that he is "appropriatly sensitive". I've "road tested" this CD myself and it works pretty nice (for these kind of purposes).

The first five songs (Doin' It For Me, Still Come Back 2 U, Infatuation, Ain't Nothing Wrong, Come Inside) are the bomb and they could easily appear on a Minnie Riperton or Prince album (think: Minnie Riperton - "Adventures in Paradise or think:Prince - "The Truth"). Other standout songs from this CD include "Doesn't Matter" "Ain't Nobody", and "Just A Little" (in which Laurneá whispers a' la Sylvia).

Do yourself a favor and pick up this CD it's timeless music that will intriduce for most some brand new "Black American Standard Music", take it home and introduce it to your "signifigant other". However when you do, don't forget the candles, the wine and be sure to be well rested. It's gonna be a LONG night...
