Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Recognizing Jet Li's rising popularity in the United States--popularity spurred on by his roles in Lethal Weapon 4 and Romeo Must Die--Dimension Home Video has released four of his Hong Kong films as a package. The weakest of them is The Defender, in which Li plays a crack bodyguard from mainland China who is appointed to protect a witness to a killing in Hong Kong. Though the movie has its share of action, Li's dour character gives him little room to display the buoyant charisma that's made him such an international star. Fortunately, the other three films more than make up for it. In The Defender, Li is a cop who goes deep undercover, becoming a noted criminal and distressing his young son, who doesn't know that his father is on a mission. This movie is a prime example of how Hong Kong movies can fuse over-the-top sentimentality with jaw-dropping kung-fu spectacle--the climactic fight scene, in which father and son work together to defeat a cadre of villains, is both hilariously absurd and dazzlingly acrobatic.

Twin Warriors is also an amazing compendium of kung-fu action, also featuring the skills of Michelle Yeoh (sometimes known as Michelle Khan, costar of Jackie Chan's Supercop and the James Bond flick Tomorrow Never Dies). This epic culminates in the development of the discipline of Tai Chi, but it's far from a history lesson--Li's character develops this new martial art to defeat his oldest friend, who's become a corrupt warlord. Finally, there's Fist of Legend, another historical epic and one of Li's best movies. A superior script and direction support an intense performance from Li, who plays the head of a martial arts school caught up in political intrigue with the Japanese. But having a stronger plot doesn't mean the movie skimps on action; on the contrary, the fight scenes have a greater emotional impact. All in all, an excellent introduction to Jet Li, one of the world's most admired action heroes. --Bret Fetzer

1.0 out of 5 stars RIP OFF ALERT: THESE ARE DUBBED RERELEASES UNDER NEW NAMES, September 8, 2000
By Jason Storm (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
Do NOT order this if you are a serious Jet Li fan. The films are simply repackaged classics, and to add insult to injury; they are all DUBBED.

Take a stand against this type of opportunistic crap; it belittles a great genre and great artists.

Do not order this collection.

I dont hold anything against Amazon.com for selling it, I only hope they will make it clear to whomever they purchase it from that this doesnt fly and their customers are not having it.

-Jason Storm

4.0 out of 5 stars same movies different names, August 16, 2000
By arthur lee (kingshill, st. croix Virgin Islands (U.S.)) - See all my reviews
this is not so much as a review but to let the public know that these movies also go by different titles. The Defender also goes by the title My Father Is A Hero. Twin Dragons goes by the title Tai-Chi. The Enforcer goes by the title The Bodyguard From Beijing. The title of Fist Of Legend remains the same. I have seen these movies and offer tis comment, if you are of the type that likes your martial arts movies to have highwire trapeze stunts in them, then the first three movies are for you. If you are a traditionalist, then fist of legend is for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why do they do this?, November 3, 2000
On first impression this appear to be a great collection. It contains 4 classic movies by Jet Li. The picture transfer are good and sometimes above average. However, the original soundtracks are completely removed and changed. It would be nice if they have just voice over the Cantonese to English but retained the great and wonderful original music and soundtracks. Take Defender. The original movie was released as Bodyguard from Beijing. It stars a talented pop singer in Hong Kong, Christy Chung and she contributed to the soundtracks by recording a few wonderful songs herself that enhanced the story line and provided appropriated musical theme in the background. In this collection all you will hear is dub over American voice actors and some basic `special effects' like guns and things breaking up. The whole production is now very cheesy and cheap. To make matter worse all 4 movies are similarly butchered.
