I didn't really know what to expect of this comp. Spanning several countries and a diverse selection of artists, the cohesively moody, introspective element is what initially struck me about this album. As a maiden release from label start-up under the auspices of CocoRosie's Bianca and her partner in crime "the fabulous miss" M, The Enlightened Family works. I am getting a sense of what to expect from them in the future.

Starting with the eerie Metallic Falcons dirge and running straight into Devendra Banhart's awesome "Houses", I was pleasantly surprised. Basically, I love the intimate voyeuristic vibe of the whole album. The various cuts also seem to stick together well, taking you through a series of psychological shades of the color blue.

A song called "Rock and Roll" by someone known as Spleen and Zen blew me away with their avant take on hip-hop rhyming with what sounds like the band that plays in your adventure dreams, only muffled helplessly under a giant pillow. Ecstatic!

So many cool pieces by people like Diane Cluck, JanA Hunter, Devendra Banhart. There's even a strange song by someone rumored to be the mysteriously wonderful Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons). Makes me wish I knew more about this kind of stuff, this has been a good introduction.

Check out "Sex with a Shark", a dubby manipulated tape jam for those who don't leave the room when someone puts on the Residents. Getting back to the eeriness, Patrick Wolf brings something purportedly from a desert island that sounds absolutely lost and spectacular but too short. The last song ends with what sounds like a tape recorder being turned off, which makes me realize how personal some of these tracks must be. I feel like a peeping tom...There's a lot more interesting music on this record but not enough time to write more. Check this CD out!
