Book Description

March 2, 1999
In this wonderful compilation of over eighty poems, poets of every age consider that most universal of themes: Love.

From traditional favorites such as William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? To contemporary poems such as John Fuller's Valentine and Ted Hughes' Lovesong, this collection, read by Judi Dench, Michael Williams, Charlotte Attenborough and Paul Rhys, is proof that Britain is a nation of romantics at heart.

Produced by the world's experts in fine radio entertainment and featuring an inspired and stirring soundtrack, this exquisite collection of the world's favorite love poems will move and delight ardent devotees to poetry and introduce a new and enchanting world of poetry to first-time listeners.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Paul Rhys, Judi Dench, Michael Williams, and Charlotte Attenborough belt out some of the best love poetry around. Feast your ears on inspired renditions of all the usual suspects--Milton, Donne, Shakespeare, Rossetti, Browning, Herbert, Blake, and dozens more--plus a refreshing array of contemporary poets like Roger McGough, Carol Anne Duffy, and John Fuller, who confesses in "Valentine,"
I'd like to see you ironing your skirt
and canceling other dates.
I'd like to button up your shirt.
I like the way your chest inflates.
I'd like to soothe you when you're hurt
or frightened senseless by invertebrates.
Peter Hutchings's musical interludes add the perfect touch to this high-quality compilation. (Running time: 2 hours, 2 cassettes) --Martha Silano

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Pietry from the Greatest, January 11, 2009

To hear Judi Dench and Michael Williams recite poetry I would swim an ocean. We will never be able to hear Michael do anything better than his collection of works from his life. Their love for their craft, as well as for one another, is wonderful to listen to. Just wish it were available on CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic poetry, great voices, distracting music, April 13, 2006
This review is from: The BBC Collection of Love Poetry (BBC Radio Presents) (Audio Cassette)
My only criticism of this fantastic collection is the instrumental interludes between poems. I've grown accustomed to and even fond of them after many listenings, and they have a usefull pallette-cleansing effect, but at first they were really jarring and bothersome. If you think you'll get over this, don't pass up a really terriffic collection read by the most beautiful voices out there.
