The collaboration of Sandra Hughes-Hassell (Associate Professor, College of Information Science and Technology, Drexel University) and Jacqueline C. Mancall (Professor, College of Information Science and Technology, Drexel University), Collection Management For Youth: Responding To The Needs Of Learners is specifically designed and intended to assist youth librarians in developing and managing a collection tailored to the holistic needs of inquisitive young students. Part one describes the theoretical foundation for learner-centered collection management; part two delineates effective strategies for collection management including selecting resources for learning and budgeting for maximum impact on learning, and part three offers tools for learner-centered collection management from stakeholder contact/SWOT analysis to a decision-making model for selecting resources that support learning to budget-justification plans and more. Charts, tables, and sample worksheets round out this excellent resource especially for public and school librarians.

Very helpful guidelines on building collections in youth libraries--involving all stakeholders and considering collection's purpose. Wish there had been something about dual-language collections. A bit idealistic in the present climate of cutbacks... and my district has been decentralized so the collaborative aspect would be more dependent on individual teacher-librarians being willing to work together. Still, something to shoot for.
