4.0 out of 5 stars Big voice, melodic ballads, July 10, 2007
This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
With his powerful voice and choice of good tunes, UK singer Tony Christie falls into the Tom Jones/Engelbert Humperdinck category of power balladeer. This collection is not complete or chronological, as his first hits were Las Vegas and I Did What I Did For Maria, both from 1971. For a more comprehensive compilation, I recommend Definitive Collection with its 21 tracks.

His early songs all had an American Western flavour, like the aforementioned dramatic ballad Las Vegas, the tragic story song Maria, Don't Go Down To Reno and the flowing Is This The Way To Amarillo which was a UK hit again in 2005. The minor hits like Avenues And Alleyways are still quite enjoyable too.

This collection also contains classy interpretations of classic hits from that era such as Home Loving Man, Tie A Yellow Ribbon, So Deep Is The Night, Feelings and Solitaire. Those who like dramatic and tuneful power ballads will find much to enjoy in the work of Tony Christie. His tuneful music has stood the test of time surprisingly well.
