4.0 out of 5 stars The best of Tracy Chapman.
I never thought I'd get a Tracy Chapman album that was better than her debut, but this is it. It takes songs from her first five albums, including 4 tracks from her debut, and 4 from her "New Beginning" album. The first 4 songs alone from "Collection" make this worth owning, they're all perfect. But other tracks like "Crossroads", "Smoke And Ashes", "All That You Have Is...

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective Recording
I am a big fan of Tracy Chapman and I bought "Collection" in Feb 2007 with great anticipation. However, from my experience and the reported feedback of at least one earlier purchaser, I strongly recommend thinking twice before buying this CD. We have each found a major recording defect in the CD. It immediately manifests itself as a loud, rapid and persistent stacatto...

The first 4 songs alone from "Collection" make this worth owning, they're all perfect. But other tracks like "Crossroads", "Smoke And Ashes", "All That You Have Is Your Soul", and the popular "Give Me One Reason" are all wonderful too. There's not one bad song here, and each one that I didn't know previously, I now love as well. Highly recommended. If you're wondering why this is import only, I found it at Best Buy for 15 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of Tracy's GREATEST, but not the BEST, January 6, 2006

This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
This is a "greatest hits" album that makes you want to buy all of her individual albums. Tracy Chapman is a thrilling artist, a pure singer with a strong voice and a true voice. She is so talented and deserves a lot more accolades than she has received. It would make a great gift for yourself or someone on your list. This is a great CD to get you introduced to some of her older songs if you are a newer fan. I would have included "For My Lover", maybe it will be in a Tracy Chapman box set someday.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good album, August 22, 2003
This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
All the important hits from Tracy's first 5 albums are featured on "Collection". I sometimes wonder where people like Tracy have gone...people who talk about things that are uncomfortable. She does that for example in her fantastic songs "Fast Car" and "Subcity" (my favourite song on the album), not to forget the superb "Talking 'Bout a Revolution".
Moreover, her great lovesongs "Baby Can I Hold You" and "The Promise" are among the most romantic ever written.
She taught us that all that we have is our soul...Tracy Chapman has plenty of it.

I am a big fan of Tracy Chapman and I bought "Collection" in Feb 2007 with great anticipation. However, from my experience and the reported feedback of at least one earlier purchaser, I strongly recommend thinking twice before buying this CD. We have each found a major recording defect in the CD. It immediately manifests itself as a loud, rapid and persistent stacatto tick superimposed over the music. Unfortunately, the record label has not yet effectively (as of 2/12/2007) recalled the inventory so new buyers at least through that date may get a defective CD like I just did. The good news is that the seller immediately authorized return of the defective product. As a fan of Tracy Chapman, I regret this has occurred. I am also disappointed in not having the CD.

I played the replacement CD and there it is still static throughout it. I am fustrated. I purchased it for a Christmas present. I gave it 1 star because that is the lowest star there is. If I could rate it zero stars, I would. Please, either make sure before sending the CD that it is not defective or send my money back.

This is a great collection of Tracy's work. It's got all her popular songs on it, and some good ones you haven't heard. I'd recommend this to anyone that has liked her radio singles, but hasn't bought any of her albums yet.

I ignored the other reviewers and bought this disk. Oops! They are right, there is a obvious buzz running through every song. I cannot believe that they still sell this. What a shame, I really wanted a collection from her!

I ordered this item and received a copy which had annoying static sounds and other bad recording problems. I returned it and asked that a proper disk be sent. The replacement sent had the same problems. There may be a batch of bad disks. I gave up with the second try and asked for a refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect For Driving, August 29, 2006
This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
I had only known the first track, Fast Car, when I bought it; but after hearing the entire album I couldn't help but recommend it to anyone I could find. There isn't one song I didn't love.

The well known and great song Fast Car is followed by a couple of slow, soulful songs that capture Chapman's true emotions. Then my favorites: I'm Ready, Crossroads, and Bang, Bang, Bang capture Chapman's ability to get your head bobbing, but keep the true essence of folk music alive.

After that, there is a series of great songs, ending with All You Have Is Your Soul, a great end to a great CD. It leaves you with butterflies in your stomach, wanting more. Don't Hesitate... Get It. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soothing and meaningful!, April 22, 2011

This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
Collection is a greatest hits album by the amazing singer songwriter Tracy Chapman containing tracks from her first five albums. Her style is based on acoustic guitar with her soulful voice and poignant lyrics delivering social messages. This hits album is great for casual fans who want a good overview of her music. Highlights include the brilliant song "Fast Car", the amazing love ballad "Baby Can I Hold You", the emotional "Telling Stories", the bluesy hit "Give Me One Reason", and the simple yet memorable "Talkin' Bout A Revolution". I'm not usually into softer music and don't often pay too much attention to lyrics but Tracy Chapman has a style that I really enjoy and her longevity is proof of her quality and musical impact.
