This collection was first printed in 1978 exactly 80 years after the original articles were printed in Strand Magazine in 1898, so the copyrights had just expired. So this book gives us what appear to be good quality scans from the original magazines preserving the actual page formatting --two columns-- with the original pen-ink illustrations.
Wow! What a way to experience these stories, as if you held the original magazines. The period illustrations make it easier for me to really be there in the mind of Wells at that time.
My favorite in this collection is "First Men In The Moon." On his way back from the moon the narrator wonders, "what am I" and gives a very cool description of the essence of a being apart from his role in history.
five stars for Wells,
five stars for the compilation
five stars for the illustrations!
