From Library Journal
The Collector's Bookshelf lists 33,614 works of fiction (which LeFontaine considers first editions) by 931 British and American authors. LeFontaine acknowledges the arbitrariness of selection, which omits many major modern writers like John Updike, John Barth, Anne Tyler, and Eudora Welty. Lists are not always complete, either--Isaac Bashevis Singer's bibliography ends in 1976, though he has continued to publish. Bibliographic information is limited to place and date, and while many of these works first appeared in paperback, there is no indication of the fact. The value guide, cross-indexed to the companion volume and thus impossible to use without it, gives the current market values of items listed there. Other guides, like Bookman's Price Index , are more reliable. Dispensable.
