Book Description

Collector's Companion to Carnival Glass March 2003
Fans of authors Bill Edward's and Mike Carwile's Standard Encyclopedia of Carnival Glass series will be delighted with this easy-to-use, small format book which highlights the more than 1,500 carnival glass patterns available, those that collectors will find most often during their early quests for these cherished treasures. Keeping the beginning collector in mind, the book is arranged alphabetically by pattern name for easy reference. Each pattern shines on its own page, with all necessary facts and a detailed photograph to illustrate the pattern. Data about each piece includes name of pattern, manufacturer, year of production, colors and shapes available, and any information on reproductions that is known. The approximately 200 patterns presented reflect just those American patterns (no foreign pieces or manufacturers areincluded) the collector or buyer might encounter in the malls or at any auction. A brief section on marks appears in the front of the book, and of course the pocket guide is filled with current values -- prices are given for every color of every pattern. AUTHORBIO: Bill Edwards is a noted expert on pressed, carnival, and opalescent glass, and has been authoring books since 1975. He now co-authors books with expert Mike Carwile. 4.0 out of 5 stars For the beginning collector, supplemental book only, August 20, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
According to the preface of this book, this second edition has some different and more rare items than the first edition. It is meant as a companion to the first edition, and is not simply an updated version--good to know before buying. The pictures generally, though not always, are good enough to help a beginning collector identify patterns. The book lists the manufacturer and dates produced, and tells if the patterns have been reproduced. However, for a beginner, a wider range of patterns, particularly all the most common ones, would be most helpful. As a novice collector, I'd start with a different book--probably Edwards' Encyclopedia of Carnival Glass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have Carnival Reference!, October 26, 2009

If you never bought or sold a piece of glass you'd still love this book. Photography is superb and the pieces unique. It lives in my car just in case I bump into a possible treasure and want to ID it and get value estimate. The variety of examples is wonderful and again, I can't say enough about the photography as carnival is the most difficult glass to snap and capture the color variegations. Love this book!
