REVIEW: This book is a compilation of dinnerware pieces and pieces of information gained from letters, trade publications, and conversations with pottery people. The pieces shown for each company represent only a small portion of what was available from the company.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Many of the names found on dinnerware are pattern names, rather than company names. Thousands of decals were used by dozens of companies - and sometimes the same decal was used by more than one company. Some companies, such as Harker and Homer Laughlin, are covered at great length; others, such as Frankoma, have only a page devoted to them. Where individual items are pictured, a value is given. Some backstamps are shown. -Old Stuff, October/November, 2005 --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars An amateur attempt with good photos, December 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia of American Dinnerware (Hardcover)
Other than the photos, there isn't much here. It's very amateurish. Whole categories are missing -- there is barely a mention of "Fiesta" at all. Makes you think the publisher had an arrangement so as not to infringe on sales of their Fiesta books. There is no mention of Metlox. Also, while there is a price guide, it only lists the specific pieces that are shown in the photos, not all the pieces in the line. This is a major shortcoming. There should be some mention of pieces not shown. The book is also poorly organized, with ads from old magazines interspersed with original writing. It reminds me of an 8th grade book report. Spend your money elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars This encyclopedia has neither depth nor breadth., August 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia of American Dinnerware (Hardcover)
The title of this book implies that it is an all-encompassing American dinnerware reference work. However, it is sadly lacking in both breadth and depth. Any collector would be well advised to look elsewhere. This work is so superficial that it is virtually useless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colorful reference book of patterns and shapes, March 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia of American Dinnerware (Hardcover)
The Collector's Encyclopedia of AMERICAN DINNERWARE contains hundreds of full color pictures as well as copies of the original store and catalogue ads. All pieces shown are priced. Book contains a price index (1984) and a complete glossary of dinnerware terms in the back. I enjoyed the references, however I was disappointed that not all the pieces to any particular pattern were listed or priced. Over-all this is a good book for novice collectors or just the curious.
