I recently purchased this book because I not only wanted to start collecting depression glass, but I wanted to know what I was talking about and also what I was buying. The photography is fantastic. The legends are priceless. The summary of each collection provides you with its' history. The valuation of the depression glass pieces allows you to make sound purchasing decisions. This book is excellent for the novice, yet invaluable for the more serious glass collector. Highly recommend!

Not what I would consider an Encyclopedia,

In my opinion, this book was a big disappointment. I was expecting more of an "Encyclopedia." The book provides incomplete lists of what specific pieces make a complete set in a particular color/pattern. The photos are lacking in detail making pattern identification difficult and/or just plain lacking so you can't determine what a particular piece to a set should even look like. A better title would be "Examples of Depression Glass and Values."

This book is a good description and selection of Depression glass. Most of the photos are B&W with a few color plates in a section there are 225 pages with a 22 point table of contents and a decent index. This covers glass from the early 20's through the 30's this was machine-made and fairly inexpensive. They used bright colors including ruby, amethyst, bright green, iridescent carnival orange, aquamarine, cobalt blue, pail pink and yellow. The pieces are mostly tableware. This book was great for identifying pieces, pictures are clear and easy to see. Also included prices for each item. It was missing a few things, but overall very used and a must have for every collector.

Gene and Cathy Florence have done an outstanding job on this book. The pictures are outstanding and an excellent source for identifying various glass pieces. The descriptions are clear and very informative. My only issue is with the prices quoted. As Internet auctions, such as eBay are now the premier source for purchasing or selling depression glass, prices are drastically lower for most items listed in this book. This is also true for other similar books by other authors as well. As on-line auction sites are now the dominant source for depression glass and other collectables, the average prices seen over time on on-line auctions must be taken into account for future values.

The book has a well written narrative for each pattern along with photographs so that you can identify the dishes you have in your collections. There also is a guide provided to give you an idea of the value of your dish. A very useful product for the average consumer if you are estate sale shopping or having a garage sale.

Good information, especially on how to spot reproductions. I also like the extensive photos of different pattern pieces.
