Inconvenient and incomplete,
By
This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia Of Hull Pottery (Hardcover)
If you seriously collect or sell Hull pottery, skip this book. Only the most expensive pieces have color pictures and valuations, but even for many of these you will only find small black and white pictures, and no valuations. Furthermore, almost 25% of the book is merely reprints from old Hull catalogs, with no valuations included. Valuations are inconveniently listed in the back of the book, which requires a lot of page flipping (very convenient for the publisher, who only has to update this section, rather than the entire book). I get the impression that this book was merely published to profit off the interest of collectors, but not really intended to serve the collector's needs.

Book helpful, but hardly definitive,
By Christine V. Smith (Cincinnati OH USA--where pigs do fly) - See all my reviews

If I could purchase only one Hull reference it would be Jeffrey Snyder's Hull Pottery: Decades of Design. The Roberts book uses color photos that look they were taken in the 1950's and in at least one case I was unable to ID a piece because of the graniness of the photo. She does include some pieces Synder's book does not and vice versa. I have found using one book to supplement the other the best bet.

VERY POOR PHOTOGRAPHY ON THE PASTEL ITEMS...,

I BOUGHT THE BOOK TO IDENTIFY THE HULL VASES WHICH I'VE COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS, BUT I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED WHEN I OPENED THIS BOOK. MANY OF THE ITEMS WERE ALMOST UNIDENTIFIABLE, DUE TO WASHED OUT PHOTOS OF THE PASTEL ITEMS - AND THE PASTELS ARE THE ONLY HULL ITEMS WHICH I OWN. I WAS HARD-PRESSED TO BE ABLE TO TELL WHAT I WAS LOOKING AT. THE YELLOWS, PINKS, GREENS AND LIGHT BLUES ARE SO PALE, AS TO NOT BE ABLE TO TELL WHERE ONE COLOR ENDS AND THE OTHER BEGINS. IN MANY PHOTOS, THERE IS ALMOST AN ABSENCE OF COLOR - EVERYTHING IS JUST A BLUR. IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR THE NUMBERS ON THE BOTTOMS OF THE VASES I OWN, I'D NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND THEM - CERTAINLY NOT BY THE PICTURES. REALLY POOR EDITING. THOSE PHOTOS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REJECTED AND RE-DONE.

THE COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HULL POTTERY by B. ROBERTS,
This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia Of Hull Pottery (Hardcover)
This book is very informative, the HULL History, the values are very helpful, and the pictures are lovely. It is helpful as there are many Hull pictures shown, in neat order with the plate number and page numbers in the back for easy Value Finding. I LOVE THIS HULL BOOK! I refer to it often and it doesn't miss a piece.

Can't live without it!,

This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia Of Hull Pottery (Hardcover)
As a new enthusiast of Hull pottery, I found this book to hold a wealth of knowledge about the Hull company itself as well as the beautiful pieces it produced. I can't live without my copy! I have found the prices to be very accurate. It was very easy to find the prices of pieces in the back of the book. I would highly recommend this book to any hull lover, as it will give you a true appraisal of the pottery.

I am a dealer so I use this book for pricing, but whether a dealer or collector this is a good book. Plenty of photos, price guide is right on the mark. I am satisfied with it.

LOTS OF COLOR PICS; HISTORY OF HULL,
By A Customer
This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia Of Hull Pottery (Hardcover)
I am a new collector and could not find a book on Hull in my local library. My son suggested amazon.com and I chose this book. There are lots of color pics of almost, if not all, the patterns Hull manufactured. There is an updated (1997) price list in the back of the book. I carry this with me when I go to flea markets/antique shopping!

The Collector's Encyclopedia of Hull Pottery(B Roberts),
By A Customer
This review is from: Collectors Encyclopedia Of Hull Pottery (Hardcover)
Though a fairly thorough bibliography of the Hull Pottery organization, this book is way too old(circa 1980!) to accurately depict today's collector market. Perhaps a collector's item now in itself, this book is in dire need of updating and revision. Referring to this edition as an "Encyclopedia" is an insult to readers and collector's alike. It also makes no mention of the extremely popular Marcrest "Daisy and Dot" line, for which I had hoped to find a complete product listing. I believe Jeff Snyder's "Decades of Design" publication will provide me with this important information.

I purchased this book to help me identify a Hull piece that I recently acquired. Unfortunately, this book did not contain information about my pottery, but the book proved to be a wealth of information. I am NOT disappointed! Great pictures and a great guide!

Book was as advertised condition, and at a very reasonable price. Shipment and delivery was prompt. Happy to find it still available, as I believe it is out of print.
