This is a well written-well researched book on a reletively unknown weapon of the German army, the 1888 mauser and commission series of firearms. It details the earlier needle rifles as well as the world famous GEW 98 Mauser that replaced 88. The gew 88 was not only used by the germans for over 40 years but was common on the world market and used from Chile to China, from Argentinia to Abyssinia. The amazing collection of pictures alone is worth the price.
Mr. scarlata has written a reference book that belongs on the shelves of every military historian or arms collector, no library should be without it.

Sadly - my copy when received was missing pages 17 thru 32. I'll make due with what I have. It's fortunate that I was able to read the missing information elsewhere.

This is a good book on a topic that has to my knowledge never been explored. The 88 has always taken a back seat to the 98 and finally there is a book for those us who appreciate the 1888. The information is good but is by no means complete. For some reason writers of books about firearms feel the need to open their work by expounding upon the history of man's use of weapons from the beginning of time before getting to the point and focusing upon their intended subject. This book was no exception, but when the 1888 Commission Rifle comes into focus the book delivers what it should. There is a whole rich topic that the book never even touches upon and that is the many fine sporting rifles that were built around the 1888 action in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I would love to see this subject addressed in book form.
