5.0 out of 5 stars The best disassembly/assembly book for old military rifles, January 30, 2008

I recently bought an Amberg 1871/84 Mauser rifle with Bavarian Regimental markings. The seller shipped it with the bolt removed.

I couldn't get the bolt to go in, so I consulted the NRA assembly book that I keep in my shop, but it was no help.

As I studied the gun, I realized the cartridge lifter was in the down position and was preventing the insertion of the bolt.

I could see no way to raise it, even with gentle prying.

So, I went upstairs and got Mowbray's book from my library and read that a strong rapid pull of the bolt was necessary to raise the cartridge lifter. Ah! I filed a hook-notch on the end of a sturdy rod, hooked it on the top back of the lifter, gave a strong jerk, and up popped the lifter.

I probably pushed the lifter down while I was fooling around with the gun before I tried to insert the bolt. I won't do that again!

This disassembly/assembly book is the best of the ten or twelve similar books I have in my library. The step-by-step photographs are a great addition to the explanatory text. If you collect, shoot, or study military cartridge guns of the world, you need this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, January 17, 2008

The section on disassembly of the Krag is, alone, worth the price of this book. Everything else is gravy, and an excellent gravy. This volume contains not merely pieces I had never seen, but ones I had never heard of.
The photos are clear, trouble spots are highlighted in the text, and the instructions are plain. A great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Disassembly Book Around, June 13, 2008
This review is from: A Collector's Guide to Military Rifle Disassembly and Reassembly (Paperback)
I have many disassembly/assembly books in my collection, and I added this one because of the great color photography that aids in the disassembly of military firearms. You will find a wide range of military guns in the book, many more than I expected to find. Mowbray publishes high quality firearm books, and this one should find wide acceptance.

I can not imagine a better guide to disassembly than this one. It covers most bolt action military rifles made and in great detail. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding!!, January 14, 2008
This review is from: A Collector's Guide to Military Rifle Disassembly and Reassembly (Paperback)
I just can't recommend this book enough. The photos are amazing. Every one is in color and they show each step of taking the rifle apart and putting it back together in very close, clear views. Lots of rare guns shown, too. This is an excellent book! I don't know how I did without it.

If you are a collector, gunsmith or just enjoy reading manuals on the disassembly of military rifles this book is a must have for you. The pictures are amazing in their clarity and the description/instructions are written plainly. I've tinkered with guns for 30 years and wish I'd had this book a long time ago.
