Confused about college admissions, buy this book!, June 6, 2010
This review is from: College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family (Capital Ideas) (Paperback)
I came across this book just as I was putting new resources into the second
edition of "What Color Is Your Parachute for Teens." Am I glad I found it!
"College Admissions Together" is my favorite book on the subject.
Authors Steve Goodman and Andrea Leiman take the college admissions process
to a whole new, and much needed level. Getting into college isn't just an
issue for teens. From long applications, to visiting campuses, to defining
each teen's higher education needs, the college application process involves
parents, teens and even younger siblings.
"College Admissions Together" recognizes these facts and walks readers
through a thorough decision making process. College decisions are not easy
and often bring out conflicting dynamics and expectations of different
family members. "College Admissions Together" identifies what often gets in
the way of making positive decisions, and offers genuine help in
understanding and defusing potential problems.
Along the way, the authors deliver much information that will help families
make important choices. The writing is superb; the tone of the book is
helpful and encouraging. If a teen in your household is considering college,
buy this book. Then work through it with your teen and family. Not only will
your teen be able to set and achieve his higher education goals, but after
working on the admission process together, the entire family will become
invested in helping their teen achieve these agreed upon education goals.
Given the importance of making good choices for a teen's first higher
education experience, this book is a must read for parents and their teens.
The world of higher education has changed. "College Admissions Together" can
help teens and families smoothly navigate today's admission process and make
good decisions for further studies after high school.

what a cool book!, September 5, 2007
This review is from: College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family (Capital Ideas) (Paperback)
College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family, by Steven Roy Goodman and
Andrea Leiman, is an outstanding work which should have an immediate place
in the homes of all parents and children contemplating the utterly complex
and confusing college admission process in the immediate or not so immediate
future. Clearly written, sensitively thought out, brimming with examples,
College Admissions Together has one general theme; no one child can pass
through the college admissions process today alone, without the help and
assistance of his or her family. More pertinently, the authors argue, the
family must be understanding, patient, helpful and loving in their attitudes
and assistance towards the college applicant, rather than judgmental, harsh
or critical.
College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family is full of examples of what
NOT to do as parents, and shamefully, you or I might well recognize some
parental behaviors that we may have engaged in in the past that will not and
cannot assist our children in the complex and difficult burden of applying
to college. The authors stress harmony, understanding and love, along with
respect for the child-applicant; affirmation and positive thinking rather
than negativity and disapproval; and in all respects, achieving a positive
result through goal-oriented actions as a cohesive group.
Achieving what College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family and its
authors want us to do will not be easy; it may require time, and breaking
down some walls and barriers, including speaking to our children as adults
and sentient beings. But in the end, the approach urged by this book and its
authors makes sense, and plenty of it.
This is a must-read for all parents, and also all students, contemplating
college in the next 1-6 years.
