4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Weight Lifting, February 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
I bought this book a few years back just after I had left college, and even though I do a slightly different workout now, I still use most of the exercises in it. This book was a lifesaver, as I needed it to gain weight (I had starved myself for quite some time until this point), and yet I didn't want to just get up to my normal weight and be all flab (genetics gave me a natural body type of a Hungarian peasant woman. Working out is a must for me, or else!). I wasn't overly sore from working out using this book, and I got the results that I wanted in about 6 weeks.

My chief complaint is the illustration of the squats. I have since learned that Marthe bends her knees much too far in the photo; *never* bend your knees further than 90 degrees. I too, also hope that a future edition will be spiral bound so that novice exercisers can hold the book open while they work out.

The nutritional advice is good for the weeks that you're dieting, although I have found that you may have to slightly increase the amount of protein you take in daily after your reach your goal weight to keep your muscular body looking well, muscular.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent!, June 2, 2002
This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
I bought this book 7 years ago, soon after I'd graduated from college. I was repaying student loan debt and couldn't afford a gym membership. Plus, I was living in a tiny studio apartment so an at-home workout regimen capable of being done in a tiny space was important. A small area of floorspace, a chair, and two dumbbells were the only required equipment.

The best part is that this program works! I saw improvements in my body even as early as the second week... and from there it just kept getting better.

This book contains good, solid advice. As a result, I find myself occasionally pulling this book off the shelf to refresh my memory about certain exercises or fitness expectations.

The College Dorm Workout qualifies as one of the most useful books I've ever bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you've got the will, here's the way...., June 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
I have always felt genetically doomed to be fat and was ready to resign myself to chubbiness until I found this book. Where was it when I was in college? It's packed with sensible eating tips, no-nonsense facts on nutrition, and a reasonably clear explanation of how a combination of diet and exercise will lead to a better body.

I realize that this book might be simplistic for some people, but for most of us, it's just right. It lays it to you straight. If you want to get to 'C', you've got to go through 'A' and 'B'.

The best thing about this book is that the exercises, which were designed to be done in a small space, are actually effective. I have a niece who is in college right now and has been trying to lose weight for a long time. I bought her this book and she reported that she'd lost quite a few pounds within the first few weeks of starting the exercises.

The author isn't some guru (although her mom is a fitness expert and was the person who put together the training routine), she's just another college gal who's been through the frosh fifteen. It's refreshingly uncondescending in it's voice so you won't feel like a dummy.

However, I DO have a few bones to pick with the designers of the book: Hopefully, in the next edition the pictures will be in color so that you can better visualize the correct postures for the exercises from an awkward position, especially if they don't remedy the dinky text describing the exercises which is equally difficult to peruse from two feet away. Also, it would help if the book were spiral bound or accordian bound so that the pages would stay in place without me having to set a book on top of it to keep the pages from flipping.

Until another edition is released where these nitpicky issues are addressed, I highly recommend you buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for college..., June 2, 1997

No complex equipment? No space required? No jumping, no jogging, no huffing and puffing? NO SWEAT!

I'm not a college student, but toward summer I still have that extra five pounds to shed...and living on a budget in a small apartment does not equal jazzercise. For anyone looking to lose a few pounds or just get into shape, this book is a must buy.

The language is simple and complex principles are made easy to understand. The pace starts as slow as you need it. And the cost is the best part!

All that's required is a few feet of space, a straight-backed chair without arms (goodwill $10), and two freeweights (another $10-$20 dollars, depending on the weight and quality). AND THERE'S NOTHING MORE TO BUY...EVER!

The exercise is as fast as you'll find it, and more effective than you'd ever believe. With this book I was able to tone up and trim down.

"Bikinis have never looked better."

This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
After heading to college for my first semester and finding it hard to walk to the gym everyday to lift weights, I bought this book, with a few laughs from my friends seeing that it has that early 90's look to it. I followed the weight liftin section of the book and found that it was a GREAT program!!! Even though on paper, it looks like using free weights in your dorm room is never going to do much, it did more than my years spent at the gym!!! I finally have arm muscles!!! Even afer 3 months of following this weight lifting plan, I can still feel it after a workout, my muscles are fatigued and still firming up!!! Someone recently asked me about what i advice would i give an in-coming freshman and i said it would be to buy this book!!! Despite it's appearance, it's definately worth every cent i spent on it!!! Buy it NOW

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect guide for beginners, June 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
If your living space is small and cluttered and you don't have the money for gym membership, this book tells you how to design a weightlifting routine that works. I tried it and it worked! I began weightlifting in my small dorm room using this book as my guide. Now that I have graduated from college and have a gym membership, I still go back to this book on occasions for advice on dumbbell exercises.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Build Stregnth and Stamina, September 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
My wife originally bought this book when she wanted to drop a few pounds. Even though I had no need to lose weight, I did it with her for moral support. What a great workout! I found that by increasing the weight when I got to the point of doing all the sets comfortably, it's actually a great strength and stamina building routine. I highly recommend this workout for anyone who wants to shed a few pounds or increase their overall strength and form.

This book not only helped me to lost over 40 pounds, but taught me how to keep it off. Four years later, I still refer back to the book frequently for advice on proper form, eating right, and also for a little inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST fitness book ever!!, June 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
I give this book five stars . . . it deserves it!! It was interesting, easy to comprehend and well organized. After careful examination of an unlimited suppy of other health and fitness books, I realized this book had basic underlying techniques that gave me a solid foundation for a TOTAL fitness program. This book was so impressive I shared the new info with all of my friends. They love it also!! It gives all of us the confidence to go into the gym and actually know what we are doing. I sincerely recommend this book to anyone regardless if they are in their college years or not.

This review is from: College Dorm Workout (Paperback)
I've recently started workout again - after having a baby - and was looking for a workout book. I remembered that I had this book in college and loved it! It is a grat book for someone living in a small space or for someone who can't afford to go to go to the gym.

I need to find my copy and start using it again.
