It's a good idea to follow this with a good internet search.

What makes this book so useful is that it includes all colleges and universities in the country, including public, private, for-profit and 2-year institutions.

This book is the best college search tool for high school students out there. The editors did a wonderful job collecting and verifying the data that is presented in this giant book. It lists important information: admissions criteria and dates, financial aid information and dates, sports, housing, enrollment numbers, location type (urban, suburban, etc), acceptance rates, graduation rates, accreditation, SAT/ACT requirements, tuition, majors (and most popular majors), student services and so much more! The data all comes directly from the various institutions and the government, so it is extremely accurate. Other publishers collect their information from various websites and are for-profit. The College Board is non-profit. However, I would recommend checking with the schools directly regarding important deadlines. Every guidance counselor and high school student should have this book!

This is my fourth time through this process. I wouldn't even begin without this book. A book this size may be intimidating for your student, but if you dig in, you'll find a wealth of information. I've purchased just about every college book around and this is still the best one to get you through the process.

"College Handbook 2012" (2291 pages) is one massive book. They should sell it by the pound! The premise of the book is quite simple: provide a short overview of the 2000+ 4 year colleges and the 1700+ 2 year colleges that grace our country. At that it succeeds, mostly. Most informative is the "freshman class profile" which includes (for most colleges) the key information of how many applicants, how many were admitted, and how many actually enrolled. It also includes the all-important tuition and room + board fees, but beware, those numbers are generally 1 or 2 years old, and so if you are looking at starting college in, say, Fall of 2012, these numbers are already outdated.

Because of the (literally) enormous size of this book, this is not particulary user-friendly. It's just HUGE. But it's a good starting point, up to a degree, simply to get a lay of the land of colleges. If your son or daughter simply wants to know what colleges are out there in his or her state (since most kids attend college in their home state), this is not a bad place to start as colleges are listed state by state. My daughter spent some, but not a whole lot, of time with this book (a few years ago), and quickly moved on to other books when she had a clearer idea of what colleges she was most interested in. In particular I'd recommed the Princeton Review's "best 376 colleges" book, the 2012 edition of which just came out, and which, if forced to choose, is the single most important college search book (assuming your child's college of interest is included in there).

I don't know what I was thinking, in the age of digital media. This would have been a great resource 20 years ago but no one needs it now if they have access to a computer. I bought it for my 11th grader, thinking it would be a help in the college search process. As she can get all the info she needs faster online, it's gathering dust. She looked at me pityingly when I handed it to her and then returned to the search software on her computer.

The College Handbook for 2012 is the companion book that goes along with the
Book of Majors. What I like most is that the Handbook gives me details and up to date
information - tuition, room and board, SAT scores, percentile of students accepted.
It is always on and ready to give me the data I will need to make a good decision

This is an awesome guide to help those clueless parents (myself included) who are trying to assist their child in the search for a compatible college. The details given in the Handbook are just enough to provide relevant information and not too overwhelming. I cannot imagine searching for colleges without this Handbook.
