5.0 out of 5 stars Essential book for beginners- all you need to start learning, March 22, 2009
This review is from: College of Piping Highland Bagpipe Tutor Part 1 Book and CD (Green Book)
This book, sometimes know in the world of piping as just "the green book", is essential to anyone beginning to learn the highland pipes.

Though old, the book is accurate, thorough, and provides plenty of instruction.

I personally didn't get the CD with the book, but in retrospect I think it would have helped me along a little bit more.

This book breaks songs down into "measures", meaning one or two lines of music at a time. Before each measure the book describes any new ornaments and how to execute them. After each measure it says what to watch out for in each bar, or mistakes that students are likely to make.

Although this book is all a student needs to start learning (minus of course a quality chanter), I found that an exercise book greatly helped me get down difficult moves such as the leumluath and the double notes (or strikes).

The only downside I've found to this book is that since the songs are broken up into two, three, or sometimes four different measures, each separated by text, one can't play most entire songs through without having to turn a page or two. I solved this easily enough with creative photocopying.

I am a beginner piper, starting rather late in life (46 years old). The "Green Book" is ESSENTIAL for anyone who is attempting to play Highland style bagpipes...no argument, you absolutely need this tutorial! Follow the lesson plan, refer to the CD-ROM, and you will gain an understanding for Highland style piping...enjoy!

This primer revision is a very good instructional and understandable tutor for the person who wants to learn the Great Highland bagpipes. The author puts all lessons in simplistic language where even the beginning novice can make headway. The CD gives me the exact rhythm, note-for-note, and even some "how to not play the notes". It also has several video helps that will come in handy when I make it to the covered material. I am enjoying practicing with my chanter now more than ever. The revision takes out some of the, shall we say, archaic wording and adds new material that gives an understandable reading to the lessons - along with new sponsorship advertisements. I have already begun learning my first song too. The Bagpipe Tutor has helped me be very optimistic about being able to fulfill one of my longtime dreams, that is, playing the Great Highland bagpipes.

EthnicSounds.com has a lot of great merchandise at a very good price. I perused their website and they are one of the best priced sites for a lot of bagpipe, accessories and other Scot, Irish merchandise. I received my book/CD sooner than the expected date and it was in great condition - the book wasn't bent, broken, wet and the CD wasn't damaged. ***** (5-stars).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great primer., September 22, 2010

This book is the standard for the piping world. I started 12 years ago using this book. After a decade's break, I ordered it to begin playing again. I have immediately begun to pick up the tunes and excercises, evidence that I was using the right material originally.
A necessity for beginners and retreads like myself.

This lesson book helps provide a solid foundation for any student learning to play the bagpipes (when coupled with an instructor). One of the most widely used lesson books out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good book that could be better, March 16, 2011
This review is from: College of Piping Highland Bagpipe Tutor Part 1 Book and CD (Green Book)
Overall, the book is very good. However, one thing that really irked me was the fact that the CD did not contain the audio files for the various scales. I really feel this is one of the most important parts of the book for a beginner. It most likely would have prevented me from getting the book, Rythmic Fingerwork, by James McGillvray, which in itself is a good book. For this, I took off a star, which I am sure that others will concur.
