Looking over the slick college brochures, you probably imagined life in college to be a series of interesting classes with engaged and supportive professors, gathering under a tree in the quad for a study group or a quick game of Frisbee, and hanging out with your awesome new friends in your cozy dorm room. But three weeks into the semester, you discover that you’re falling hopelessly behind in your bio class, your dorm room is claustrophobic and your roommate is driving you crazy, and you miss the familiar friends back home. It’s then you realize: College can be stressful.
But as Kelci Lucier states in her new book, “College Stress Solutions”, you don’t have to be stressed just because you are in a stressful environment; the key is learning how to identify the sources of stress, and develop effective coping strategies so you can handle these issues long before you become “a stressed-out, burned-out mess”. Realizing that problems with homesickness require a much different set of solutions than confusion about choosing a major, the author has broken the book into chapters that deal with each of the most common areas of stress and provide clear, step-by-step suggestions to put you back in control of the situation. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of action plans that are especially useful for time-challenged students and parents.
My Take: I found this book to be an excellent resource for any student heading off to college. I appreciated the author’s style of asking the questions at the start of each chapter to help define what is causing the stress.

As graduation season has come and gone, it is time for many students to prepare for their collegiate journey. I strongly encourage them start it with this book, College Stress Solutions. Kelci does a great job offering clear and concise solutions to many issues students face. She leaves no stone unturned as she addresses a plethora of areas, including financial aid, adding/dropping classes, body image, building healthy relationships, and self-care. The bonus is that the advice will carry over into adult life both, personally and professionally. I wish I had this book during my college years. It is the perfect gift for the new graduate! I strongly recommend this book for a first year course and it should be on the bookshelf of every faculty and staff person who comes into contact with students.
