5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book with great advice!
I am a residence life advisor at University of Texas and for years I've been recommending this book to incoming freshman, especially those with a lot of questions and concerns about college life. Students can relate to it because it was written by a team of students. Thank you Greg Gottesman for revising it again. There is another book that I wish every parent would buy...

3.0 out of 5 stars It isn't as great as some......
This book does have a lot of common sense information, but it isn't as in-depth as others. There is a chapter on nutrition that is very uneccessary, since most people know the food groups. A lot of it is too basic to be of any use. The internet chapter is absolutely pointless, since most of us know how to use the internet.
I would buy " The Ultimate College...

Students can relate to it because it was written by a team of students. Thank you Greg Gottesman for revising it again. There is another book that I wish every parent would buy for their children going to college, and that's Major In Success by Patrick Combs. I recommend getting College Survival to help your son or daughter make the adjustment, and Major in Success to help them standout.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift: Useful and Down to Earth, November 24, 1999

All how-to books have a cheesey element to them...and while this is no exception, the information is up to date, useful and easy to access. What's really great about this book is that you can use it as you need to-- no need to read it in one sitting, just wait until you're in a bind and then read whatever section is pertinent. It's well done, comprehensive, and fun. The perfect gift for a senior in high school or college student.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book covers everything!, June 25, 1998
By A Customer
I didn't think I would need this book at first. I was flipping through a copy that a friend of mine got as a graduation present, and I thought that it would just be filled with all the same stuff my parents and teachers had lectured to me about college, what to bring, what not to bring, blah blah. Boy was I wrong! It has absolutely every detail covered and I feel much more confident about leaving for college this fall!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book makes me psyched for college, January 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: College Survival 5th ed (Arco College Survival) (Paperback)
As an avid user of Amazon and a senior in high school, I bought several college survival books. This one was one of the best. It is clealy written and to the point, yet fun to read. The student quotes add humor and force you to realize that everybody makes mistakes in college. The book covers every topic imaginable for the college-bound student. It explains what to bring, how to pack, how to get airline tickets, choose classes, use a computer, surf the net, and much more. Furthermore, it covers much more than what is common sense. Due to this fabulous book, I am psyched to be going to college in the fall.

4.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book for college bound students., June 22, 1997

I really recommend this book to seniors about to go to college who really have no idea what to expect. They even provide a checklist in the back so you know exactly what to take to college, and why you need all the things included. I left completely prepared for my journey into the "real world" of college life

I would buy " The Ultimate College Survival Guide" instead. It was basic, but in-depth as well.It had all the information this book has and then some.
No, I am not affiliated with the authors of the book in any way. I am just a college student making a suggestion to freshmen. Why buy this book when there are better ones?

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great advice, June 24, 2004
By A Customer
the main problem I had with other "college survival books" were that they all induced the "DUH" response from me. don't let your grades drop. use effective study techniques. there may be tensions between you and your roommate. DUH. this kind of information is common sense, the things I knew and anticipated in the first place.

this book packs a lot of advice and insights that I could actually USE.. a lot of the pages had me going "ooh, so THAT's what it is." or "hey, I always wanted to know that." as a freshman-to-be, i found htis book tremendously helpful and reassuring. I don't know if my opinion of this book will change after I actually experience my first year, but as of now I feel a lot safer, more confident and ready for next year. and that's exactly what I needed from a book like this.

This book covers most of the basics of college life. No surprises. No big discoveries. However, chapters 12 (Computers at College)and 13 (The Internet) are outdated. These things are so basic to a typical high school students at this day and age that these two chapters are either unnecessary or very inadequate. Chapters 6 through 11 are pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, yet easy to read, July 11, 2005
By
I'm pretty much your typical college freshman-to-be; I'm scared, excited, and don't really know what to expect my first year away from home. I have read other college advice books, and have found this to be one of the more helpful books in easing some of my first year fears. What made this book stand out from other college advice books was the fact that the advice came from college students themselves, the so called experts in the field. The advice was solid and covered a broad range of topics including what to bring with you to college, freshman orientation, the do's and don'ts of picking out a schedule, financial matters, and even how to do laundry. Above all else, this was a very easy and entertaining book to read. This book provided the answers that I was looking for; I feel much more confident and ready about going off to college now.
