A very handy desk reference.,

I'm giving this a 9 simply because I only skimmed through it a bit before I gave it to my cousin as a gift. Many years ago when I had English Comp, we were given Diana Hacker's "A Writer's Reference." This was a great book, but now I've misplaced it and it's out of print. This book, "The College Writer's Reference," is an excellent substitute, covering fine points on grammar, punctuation, research, style, etc. I simply refuse to get a writer's reference book that doesn't have easy- and quick-to-use tabs separating each section, and this book's got it all. If you write, whether it be formal or informal, get this book.

Love it so much, I'm replacing my old, ratty copy with the updated version.,

The 1998 edition of this book was a required text for a business writing class I took as an undergraduate. The organization, content, and approach were so helpful, and made so much sense, that it's been my constant companion throughout graduate school, and my professional career.
Today, when I referred to my old text, I noticed it looks tattered and well-used. I'm ordering a replacement for myself, and a copy as a gift to my German colleagues, as I often proof their outgoing communications in English. This single text has made a noticeable, positive impact, and I am grateful. |
