Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Coming hard on the heels of Keatons comic masterpiece, The General, this was a relaxing romp in both setting and approach after the exacting precision of the American Civil War comic-drams. It was very typical Keaton material and a fine comedy, but did not sustain the tone Buster had achieved in The General. Although Buster did not achieve the same in College, there is nothing to indicate that he attempted anything other than to provide a lot of fun for his fans and thats exactly what it proved to be. Those knowledgeable of silent comedy may wish to compare it with Harold Lloyds earlier movie The Freshman. While both Keatons and Lloyds approach to college life bore considerable similarity in theme, the difference rested in their comic characters. Lloyd was the go-getting American boy who triumphed by that predestination seemingly the right of all Horatio Alger heroes; the pawn of fate, Buster came through by virtue of a miracle! Had he realised that his professional independence was soon to end with the sale of the contract to MGM by Joe Schenk, he might not have been as happy-go-lucky, but when College was released on 9 September 1927, Buster was at the top of the heap with every intention of staying there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great campus comedy, April 16, 2005

Buster Keaton stars as the brainy student who goes to college and tries to win his sweetheart by becoming an athlete. Needless to say, everything he tries (mainly baseball and track & field) he's a flop in. He's finally assigned to the crew team as its coxswain, wins the big race with his ingenuity, and then rescues his girlfriend from a kidnapper by employing all the athletic skills he couldn't muster on the field.

Actually the whole picture is just a series of sporting ineptness sight gags, predictable and fairly obvious, but made marvelous by Keaton's tremendous talent: he makes them very funny to watch. An indication of their greatness is the fact that so many of the routines have been used again and again by others in Hollywood. Silent. Worth a watch.
