Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-- Three cultures collide: those of Sky-fire-trail, an Indian of the land now known as Manhattan who is searching for a way to save his tribe; Frankie, a contemporary Long Island teenager with an interest in androids, ecology, and space; and Hahn IX/Pod #6, a Hamanoid Android for Hyperspace Navigation (H. A. H. N) sent on explorations of inhabited and habitable worlds on behalf of the Intergalactic Society for Planetary Conservation, and who is finding disturbing signs of humanity growing in his otherwise logical, programmed mind. An attack from a second H. A. H. N. turned traitor to Hahn's mission sets in motion events that will change the past and the future, and bring together all four characters in fast-paced, action-packed pursuits through time and space. In the end, Frankie's quick thinking and even quicker action help resolve an almost impossible situation to everyone's satisfaction. All this is somewhat easily done, with only shallow consideration of the ultimate effects of tampering with history. Hahn's high-tech equipment makes conversations between them all amazingly smooth, and Frankie and Sky-fire-trail are extraordinarily wise for their young ages when put to the test. However, likable characters, snappy dialogue, and fast action make for an enjoyable read, with possiblities for a sequel. Chetwin has done her homework, offering a glossary plus a bibliography of four books with background information on the historical settings, Frankie's taekwondo expertise, and robot intelligence. This last volume, a 1989 title, is mentioned in the text as a book Frankie reads--an admirable integration of factual material in an entertaining story. --Susan L. Rogers, Chestnut Hill Academy, PA

5.0 out of 5 stars It sticks in your mind, November 23, 2000

This review is from: Collidescope (Hardcover)
I read this books years ago and I still remember it. If that's not the mark of a really good book, I don't know what is.

The story is easy to follow. An alien android trying to preserve ecosystems is attacked by a reprogrammed duplicate android and has to land on Earth. To prevent crashing into modern-day New York, he travels back in time to the time where only native americans inhabited the area - coinciding with the birth of a young brave of whom the shamen said is going to avert a forthcoming calamity.

Add a young girl from the 20th century who knows martial arts and much time traveling, and you get a really memorable story.

I'd recommend it.
