A Good Buy,
By Annie (Quezon City, Philippines) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Collins Chinese Concise Dictionary (HarperCollins Concise Dictionaries) (Paperback)
i am a college senior minoring in Chinese Studies. i recently bought this dictionary and it has been of great help in my mandarin class. it has everything essential in it: chinese characters, pinyin, and english/chinese translations. this dictionary also clearly explains how to look up chinese characters by using the radical (or stroke order) index. the only flaw i saw is in the english-chinese part of the dictionary. although the chinese counterparts of the english words are shown along with its different definitions, only the first translation is in pinyin. the sample sentences where the chinese words are used are no longer given its pinyin pronunciation but are instead written using chinese characters. this gave me a hard time figuring out how to use some of the chinese translations in chinese sentences. but all in all, this is a good book for both english and chinese speakers learning either chinese or english.

This was a worthwhile purchase. I'm in the midst of learning Chinese for school and of course with that comes the need to be able to look up the words/characters your teacher was talking about earlier. BeforeI bought this dictionary, I had purchased a Webster's Chinese dictionary which was a great purchase due to the inclusion on measure words with a word if it used any. Eventually, I outgrew that one, needing a dictionary with bigger type, more words, and a larger radical index, I eventually settled on this one. It's a a better dictionary compared to my previous one minus the fact that it doesn't list measure words. What is a really nifty feature is the Chinese in action section that is quite a good review of the basic concepts and constructs of the language. The bold face for each character is also a nice touch. Overall this dictionary is worth the purchase for beginners to intermediate students in Chinese, though I'm sure there are better dictionary for more advanced users.
