I agree with the other reviewers that this is the best bilingual Italian and English dictionary (that I know of). I believe it is better than its main competitor, the Oxford-Paravia dictionary.
This dictionary is comprehensive, including derivations not found in other dictionaries, and features idomatic usage, as noted by the other reviewers. It has a clear format...

This is undoubtedly an extensive dictionary and I have found words in it that I haven't been able to locate in others. Well, I need help with the pronunciation of some words and I don't get it from this dictionary. I have to refer back to my first Italian dictionary to find the pronunciation of the word. That is my only complaint. But for someone trying to learn the...

It has a clear format and is easy to use.

However there is one important thing to note, and that is that this dictionary provides almost no grammatical assistance. Its verb conjugation tables are more sparse and there is no guide to sentence structure, 'tricky' word choices, writing letters, saying "hello" or asking the way to the nearest train station. This dictionary fulfills its objective of being the top candidate for the advanced user (and could be a good investment for intermediate level users), but is not suitable for beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is A Keeper, Don't Waste Your Time With Others!, January 1, 2002

Has tons of words! Many Italian idiomatic expressions and past, present, and future tenses with examples. I bought and returned several others prior to this one. The only downside, it's a little on the expensive side but for the quality, in retrospect, it's worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Biggest and Badest, April 23, 2002
This review is from: Harper Collins Sansoni Italian Unabridged Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is definately the best modern Italian dictionary on the market today. Not a travelling book. It is HUGE. I used this book for a big translation project and did not need anything else for the Italian portion. A definate must for the professional translator or student of Italian.

If you are looking for the master dictionary of English-Italian translation you found it! I owned and aggressivley used a previous version of this dictionary for a job (I am a mechanical engineer and worked for an Italian company - and I do speak fluent Italian). The job, being highly technical in nature, required me to learn new terminology that I had not previously used. Even many business terms that I did not know. I found everything I needed in this dictionary. Don't waste your time with anything else! This is the only dictionary for translating you will likely ever need and it IS worth the price!

Well, I need help with the pronunciation of some words and I don't get it from this dictionary. I have to refer back to my first Italian dictionary to find the pronunciation of the word. That is my only complaint. But for someone trying to learn the language, it is a fairly relevant issue.
