This biography not only told the story of a true pioneer in the bicycle and auto industries in the U.S. but it also put Colonel Pope's life in perspective with the time, with other giants of the industries and his impact on American life and culture. I have been interested in the early history of autos for a long time. This book is not only about one man but is also about the roles of a number of other players (like Henry Ford, Walter Chrysler, etc.) in the early history of transportation in America. Good roads (or the lack thereof) were very important in the development of bicycle and auto transportation. Colonel Pope was shown in the book to have a leading role in all three.

For me, this book was a very interesting and well-presented piece of American history.
