5.0 out of 5 stars From the Back Cover:, September 17, 2005
This review is from: Colonel Ancroft's Love (Regency #159) (Paperback)
Breaking through his defences... When Colonel John Ancroft is persuaded to escort an elderly widow to Yorkshire, he has no idea that the lady in question is heiress Caroline Duval. Her disguise is only revealed when he happens upon her, her widow's clothes discarded, swimming naked in a pool. Suddenly his much vaunted self-control is severley tested as he confronts this bewitching beauty. But she's embarked on a dangerous family undertaking where scandal could bring them both down...

I really like to read a little bit about a book before I buy it, so that's why I posted this, because I'm sure I'm not the only one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong characters influenced by hurtful pasts mixed with mystery, July 26, 2009

This review is from: Colonel Ancroft's Love (Regency #159) (Paperback)
This was my first by this author but will not be my last. Both the characters of Colonel John Ancroft and heiress Caroline Duval were very strong and had personalities that were greatly influenced by hurtful pasts. John was known as stiff and a "wooden soldier" by most that knew him, and Caroline was very beautiful and desired by all men but many claimed she had no heart. They were thrown together due to a promise made by Caroline to her dying grandfather. Parts of this "promise" were slowly revealed throughout the story right to the very end which kept the reader guessing. The attraction between the two characters was immediate but slow to progress. If you're looking for lots of love scenes, you won't find them in this book; however, you will feel the love developing between the two characters in spite of it. Even when the mystery is solved the love story is not so there's plenty more to read. I loved both characters but especially Caroline. She was plain speaking, open-minded, strong in character and knowing how to protect herself, and every bit a lady. The minor characters in the story (and there were many) were all interesting and really contributed to the story each in their own way. This book has joined my list of favorites.
