4.0 out of 5 stars mind blowing colors and art
"Colonel Bleep" is said to be the first ever made for TV cartoon series to be made in color! Boy, what vibrant, bright, loud color! And what amazing art and design! Clever plots, too. "Colonel Bleep" is one of the very best cartoon series of the 1950s. There is a LOT of influence here on the art and style of "Ren & Stimpy". John K. and company were easily familiar...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Strikes
Colonel Bleep is even more primative than I remembered. I was less that 7 when I watched these in the 1950's. If your child demands sophistication in cartoons, skip this. I loved its simplicity. A caveman, a living wooden puppet, and a super science alien protector of our space sector, none of whom speak, make up the cast. The narrator provides all the verbal info...

John K. and company were easily familiar with "Colonel Bleep" when making "Ren & Stimpy" and other cartoons. No doubt about it.

I watched "Colonel Bleep" on TV (in black & white, of course) in the 1950s when I was not yet old enough to go to school. I never forgot this cartoon!

The cartoons on this DVD have had little done digitally to clean up the picture and sound. Well-used films were the source here, not original negatives, for certain. Until something more definitive comes out, this DVD will be the one to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like 50's space-age? You'll LOVE these..., November 9, 2001
I stumbled across these by accident from a video catalog about 10 years ago-- I ordered vol 1 and when I got it-- IT ALL CAME BACK TO ME-- I had seen these before and had completely forgotten how cool they were. As a kid in Southern California in the mid 1950's these were cartoons shown on TV-- Way cool graphics that may have inspired the artist SHAG (along with Disney's Toot Whistle Plunk & Boom). These were the first color cartoons produced specifically for TV. The 5 minute episodes have simple plots, but the classic dated graphics and concepts are priceless. Video quality is excellent (at least the ones I got ~10 years ago are).

This review is from: Colonel Bleep, Vol. 1 (DVD)
If you're interested in vintage animation from the 50's,you'll love this DVD. Really cool artwork. Know that this DVD was made from some scratchy, well worn prints but I'm not complaining, just glad to have it available.

The narrator provides all the verbal info. Give it to a small child whose sense of wonder is intact. This is for someone who likes Fred Rogers. It's sweet; it's simple, it's Spacey. Bleep has a lab and a cool island where he and his sidekicks live and their adventures begin. The characters and situations have signature sound effects that young kids will like.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take me back!, September 1, 2000

One of the earliest TV cartoons I can remember seeing. This is a good quality tape of one of the more original cartoon series I have ever seen. You must have seen the series as a child to get a full appreciation of this 'toon, but is a good, obscure, piece of American TV memorabilia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stand by for adventure.....3-2-1, March 2, 2003

When I recieved these two videos in the mail i was like a kid on Christmas morning popped Colonel Bleep into the vcr and was instantly carried on a putonic wave through space and time to Futura space ranger Colonel Bleeps home planet then took a swift ride on the trav-a-lab with Bleep squeak & scratch to zero-zero island.I was back in 1957 with the tv all to myself watching one of the best cartoons ever.Episodes include trouble from Dr.Destructo Black Patch the pirate & the black knight. This was early morning ecstasy for a 6 year old boy in 1957 the age of sputnik and the space race. The sound effects and Noel Taylor's many voices add to the charm of this series. Now if Tapeworm would do a DVD release and maybe dig up a few more episodes I would be first in line to purchase it.Each video has 6 episodes each one better then the next.tape quality is excellent considering the age of the source material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jumpin' Jiminy, It's by Emenee!, January 20, 2001

If you remember Crusader Rabbit and Beany and Cecil, and you used to get up at 5:30 A.M. on Saturday mornings, you'll surely remember the Colonel! Along with his caveman pal Scratch he acted as a cartoon intergalactic sentinel patroling the immediate universe, keeping the peace. It utilized the standard early 60's minimalist animation technique with narration to help you follow along. This is the cartoon Davey and Goliath would watch while taking time off from theorizing about the "G" man.

I can remember staying up until all the t.v. stations would go off the air, the latest always being WCBS in N.Y. after the Late Late Show, and then coming back on within 30 minutes with the Star Spangled Banner, Sunrise Semester, and finally Colonel Bleep. This signaled the begining of the most holy time of the week for a 6 year old - Saturday morning cartoons!

If you can relate to any part of this story, than you'll also enjoy this video. Don't forget Supercar, Thunderbirds, Astroboy, Gigantor, and Tobor - the Eighth Man!
