I used the Merkur blade that came with the razor, and then tried a Feather blade- both very good.

A few weeks ago I decided to treat myself to a straight blade shave from one of Seattle's premier barbers. Well it was such a wonderful experience I wanted to duplicate it at home. With the guidance of the most excellent book Leisureguy's Guide to Gourmet Shaving, Fourth Edition: Shaving Made Enjoyable I bought this razor, this variety padck of blades, 110 BEST Blades Sampler FEATHER KAI BLUEBIRD LORD ASTRA GILLETTEsome Proraso Pre and Post Shave Cream - 3.6 oz, some Musgo Real Glycerine Lime Oil Soap, a bunch of white terry barber sized towels from Costco and this morning I had my first home based wet shave. The book is truly awesome and a fantastic guide, however, it advises not to use the blade that comes with the Merkur Razor. I ignored that advice and used the blade. Other than that, I pretty much followed the advice of the book and it was like I had a spa day at home this morning! The Proraso Cream really made my face feel alive. I only did two passes because I found that my face was as smooth as a baby's bottom after just two.

The book stresses that it's the blade that's the most important component and everybody's different. Perhaps that's true and I just got lucky but I loved the end result with the Merkur Blade that came with this razor. So much so, that I'm wondering what I'm going to do with those 100+ blades I got in the sampler pack.

It came time to "invest" in new blades for my electric razor that "shaves as close as a blade" again, and I decided to go back to the Gillete safety razor made in the 1950's my father had abandoned years ago. I liked the results, and the cheap blades, so much better than the electric that I went out and bought this one. It's a solid peice of simplicity, and didn't take long to get used to. The Merkur blade was nice, but I switched it out for Derby's. Don't. Go looking for "Shark" blades. You can get them in lots of 100 cheap, and they're just as good as the Merkur one. They're Indian made instead of German, though, if that means anything to you.

I love this razor. I've been using (and cursing) disposables all my life. I bought this out of desperation and have been delighted ever since. Shaving is fun again! No more razor burns or ingrown hairs. I have to admit there is an added aspect of... well... manliness about shaving with a safety razor.
I found out I can get the blades at almost any dollar store (not at the big chains, though, like Target). Cheap, fun, and uplifting. I'd recommend this to anyone.

Shave the way Dad and Grand Pa shaved. The mass produced, mass advertised, plastic face rakes you buy are a money pit. This German made razor is built to last, the weight is a welcome change. The selection of razors are great and I plan to try several brands until I declare the perfect shave. Which ever razor you plan to purchase with this Mekur Long Handle Razor will beat hands down any throw away razor you buy and buy and ..... at the store. It makes the morning shave a "rite" and not a chore.
