Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-A summary of the ways in which different ethnic groups living in colonial America celebrated and entertained themselves, arranged by season, followed by chapters that cover "Sports and Recreation," "Games and Toys," "Social Amusements," "Entertainments and Pastimes," "Observances," and "Working Bees." These divisions seem a bit arbitrary, and the subjects overlap. Brief descriptive paragraphs under each subdivision give readers enough information for short reports, but lack the narrative flow to hold their interest. African American and Native American activities are covered. However, the material on other groups is difficult to locate. Dutch and German settlers and Jewish holidays and entertainment are listed in the index, but not English or French. The many black-and-white illustrations and reproductions vary in quality and clarity, and their captions are not sufficient to place them in an exact location or period. Bobbie Kalman's Early Christmas (1981) and Early Pleasures and Pastimes (1983, both Crabtree) cover similar ground, and are much more visually attractive and appealingly written.
