Crisply played and nicely recorded. Like sitting by the fire at Geo. Washington's home during a party and a particularly good group of musicians has been engaged for our enjoyment. Useful for dance, or for background ambiance.

Missed this CD for Christmas? Buy it now for next year. Everyone loved these recordings. Don't listen to the detractors...these recordings are quite wonderful and full of good cheer! Make one feel as though they were in colonial Virginia of a by gone era...To those who already own it. a .Merry Old Colonial Christmas to you!

A must-have Christmas album,
By Doug the CISSP (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colonial Christmas (Audio CD)
I usually try to buy a new Christmas music album or two every year. There's so much wonderful music of the season that has nothing to do with little drummer boys or red-nosed reindeer. This year's pick, Colonial Chistmas, is going to be a favorite. The selection of music captures the spirit of the season while not re-hashing the same litany of the usual tunes you hear at the mall. The musicianship of all the performers brings these tunes to life, not just an academic exercise in period music. I'm really looking forward to playing this for my guests as an accompaniment to a Christmas dinner.
The production of the CD is superb, with a beautiful cover and thoughtful liner notes. For the audiophile, the recording and mastering is top-rate, bringing all the subtleties of the performance and instruments into your living room. If you've got someone on your list who love good music and appreciates the sounds of the season, you can't go wrong with Colonial Christmas.

I bought this to show to organizers at the Colonial Christmas at the Vanderveer House in Bedminster, New Jersey. It fit right in line with what they are doing there for their annual fundraiser. It'd be a great idea if I could get them to sell it at the event as well. I'll try - [...]

I have a lot of Christmas CD's, but this one is at the top of the list. Some people find this music a bit morose, but it makes me think of stockings and lace, garland and snow. Love it.

Cold, formal, lifeless,

The music here is played in a formal, chamber music style, which renders it devoid of passion and blood. Performances are sluggish, slow, and sleepy. These pieces were written to be played spritely and lively, but you won't find that here. If you want to hear early American music played in a properly spirited fashion, get the Hesperus CDs (Early American Roots, An Early American Quilt, and Colonial America.)
