Book Description

July 2003
"Readers may have heard of Hong Kong's economic miracle during the half century after the war, but they may be unaware of the suffering and injustices created by greed and corruption that stirred the spirit of determination upon which the Hong Kong we know today was built. This book will tell readers about that struggle. It will also give them a bird's eye view of the worldwide scale of injustices, corruption and greed for power that made 'countless nations mourn' in the aftermath of World War II."--Elsie Tu

"With decidedly pro-grassroots sympathies, Mrs Tu is fiercely critical of British colonialism with its corruption, hypocrisy, malpractice, racist and pro-big business bias in pre-1997 Hong Kong.... This book yields keen insights into and informed observations of government and community in colonial Hong Kong, often from a ring side, first-hand perspective." --Ming K. Chan, Hoover Institution, Stanford University

1.0 out of 5 stars By turns ghastly, silly, and without serious intellectual merit, July 27, 2006

Madame Tu has an undeniably unusual perspective on issues, and her service to the disadvantaged in Hong Kong is a well known matter of local record. That said, most of her observations are either trite, without foundation, or politically and intellectually biased. A previous reviwer wondered why Madame Tu is no longer sought by the HK press - the reason is that her views are predictable, largely irrelevant, and not news worthy. A reader looking for a picture of colonial HK life would do better to read one of the many memoirs on the subject, or better watch Suzie Wong - the pictures at least do some justice. Unless one is merely seeking a source of questionable validation for preconcieved views of HK (the US?) - this is a waste of time and money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice book, June 24, 2003

Elsie spent her whole life helping those underprivileged and gained a high reputation. However, recently we seldom hear Elsie expresses her ideas in the mass media. What a pity !What's the problem ? I bet it's the problem that our media do not accept voices from the minority. Although I do not agree all the points of Elsie's politicial ideas in this book, I still think her ideas are incisive and peculiar. They're worth to think about. For those who are interested in Hong Kong social history or concern about the democracy movement, I recomnmend they should read this book. I bet they may have a more in-depth view to today's Hong Kong political situation after reading the book.
