The 102 one- or two-page articles include entries on the people, places, events, documents, social issues, and ideas of this era. Biographical profiles include prominent Native Americans as well as American colonists and European leaders who played a role during this time. Sidebars highlight interesting anecdotes and personalities, and offer other supplements to the readable text. Excellent-quality, color photos, diagrams, and reproductions of period prints and documents add to the presentation. Cross-references at the end of each article help connect related topics. The glossary is brief and rudimentary and the indexing is adequate. Ruth Dean and Melissa Thompson's Life in the American Colonies (Lucent, 1998) is similar in level, depth, and appearance-minus the color-but has a greater focus on daily life and less on politics.
