Book Description

6 and up1 and upHistoric Communities
Bobbie Kalman's acclaimed Historic Communities Series provides a close-up view of how people lived more than two hundred years ago. Colorful photos, many taken by Bobbie Kalman herself at restored historic villages across the country, help support the fascinating information. Children will have fun learning about:
-- early homes and the settler community
-- what people wore and the crafts they made
-- how settlers made their living
-- how they spent their leisure time
-- the values, customs, and traditions of the early settlers

A Colonial Town: Williamsburg brings 18th century Williamsburg, Virginia to life for young readers. At a time when Virginia was a colony of England, children will witness its founding and restoration, travel down the cobblestone streets, and guess which shop signs represent which shopkeeper.

Buildings explored include:
-- the Governor's Palace
-- the church
-- the school
-- the Public Gaol
-- the apothecary
-- the post mill

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- Three slim introductory volumes. Colonial Crafts features photographs of relevant shops in Williamsburg. Apprenticeship is briefly described and a dozen or so occupations are highlighted. A Colonial Town notes the history of the colonial capital and mentions the massive restoration project. An aerial drawing of the historic district shows the locations of the various landmarks. Tools and Gadgets : breaks its subject down into categories such as home, medical, food, at the farm, etc. It uses many drawings taken from old prints to supplement the photographs of the various objects described. These books will be useful primarily for their clear and colorful graphics; sources of information are woefully lacking. Report writers will be better served by Edwin Tunis's Colonial Living (Crowell, 1976), Fisher and Fowler's Colonial America (Gateway, 1988), or titles from Leonard Everett Fisher's `` Colonial Amerian Craftsmen '' series (Watts; o.p.). --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA

Taken from Chapter 14: The People of Williamsburg The population of Williamsburg was made up of merchants, farmers, tradespeople, government officials, plantation owners, clergymen, laborers, students and slaves. The wealthiest residents were called the gentry. The middling sort consisted of tradespeople and other shopkeepers. Most people were below these two groups. The lowest level of society consisted of black slaves who were owned for life. In the early years of Virginia many people from faraway places came to live in Williamsburg. In exchange for their passage by ship they agreed to work as servants in the town. These workers were called indentured servants. Over time, slaves replaced indentured servants as workers.

This is a wonderful and accurate book to use to enhance unitson colonial life in America. After my family visited ColonialWilliamsburg, I felt the need to share the things that I had learnedwith my students. What a super job this author has done to assist inthis area. The illustrations are accurate interpretations of thehistorical buildings in Williamsburg. This book is easily adapted toall elementary levels. It is a great book to share with your ownchildren to teach them about our country's history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and colorful insight into 18th Century life., September 18, 2007
By
This review is from: A Colonial Town: Williamsburg (Historic Communities) (Paperback)
This slim volume is a wonderful educational tool used in addition to textbook and other in depth studies.

The author's presentation is accurate in a wonderful "you are there" way. For children, this book would be an awesome preparation for a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, or souvenir of a visit to that museum.

Excellent and highly recommended.
