5.0 out of 5 stars A story of forbidden love across cultural lines., June 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Colonist (Paperback)
This short novel is also known as Green Island. It is about an English teenage boy in Mexico who falls in love with the gardener's son, who is not gay. It is an excellent treatment of a delicate theme. Not only is the relationship complicated by the homosexuality, but by the cultural and ethnic differences between the boys. It is a love doomed to failure. Disaster occurs when the English boy steals from his mother's purse and is caught at it. This brings the story to an unhappy conclusion, but it is hard to see how there could have been a happy one in any case. It is too bad that this excellent story will probably appeal only to gay male readers and be lost in the deluge of novels of gay adolescence
