5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, September 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Colonists (American Family Portraits #2) (Paperback)
Like the first book in the series, I found The Colonists an excellent reading experience. Although captivatingly suspenseful for a book set in this time period, it was meticulously consistent with historical events and reality. One thing that continues to impress me about the writer is his use of complex, strikingly human characters. I find Cavanaugh's understanding of human nature amazing. It is interesting to see how much the attitude of the Puritans changed over the course of 1 or 2 generations. I think that just about anyone would enjoy a book of this caliber. I surely did and I can't wait to see what Cavanaugh has in store for me in his next book!

So far I have only read the first three books in the American Family Portrait series and I absolutely loved all of them! Jack Cavanaugh writes such in-depth novels with such compelling characters! I couldn't put it down. Though I love all of the books that I have read so far in this series I have to say that with The Colonists Cavanaugh has truly outdone himself!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good history and characters, May 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Colonists (American Family Portraits #2) (Paperback)
I had a hard time putting this one down. The characters were fairly well written. However, I had a problem with the plot. While it worked well for a work of fiction, it added an element of disbelief, but not enough of one to make me put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars by me!, May 14, 2005
This review is from: The Colonists (American Family Portraits #2) (Paperback)
The Morgan family line continues in the second book in the "American Family Portrait Series". In "The Colonists" it follows the lives of three young adults~great-great-great, etc grandchildren of Drew Morgan. Phillip is young and determined to find the family Bible that belonged to Drew, Patricia, also young and fiercely independent and Jared, the youngest and rebelious, who takes chances and risks. This is an awesome Christian read, filled with action and adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars God and Family Comes First!, April 17, 2007
Drew Morgan's prayer to God was that the Morgan family would always be a strong and loving Christian witness. But this generation of Morgans don't get along very well. Benjamin Morgan has died, leaving behind a lonely widow and three children who don't seem to share his passion for God. Philip Morgan, the oldest son, wants to be a Harvard scholar like his dad, but he puts his career on hold to fulfill his father's dying wish, to find the missing Morgan family Bible. Priscilla Morgan is a spunky, headstrong young woman who has a mind for business in a world where men rule the roost. And Jared Morgan is a young man bent on living an adventurous life.

But the Spirit of God is at work in 1730s New England, and in three stories that converge together, the three children of Benjamin Morgan learn that people matter to God. They learn that a life of sacrifice and love is much more fulfilling than a life of self-centeredness and selfishness. They must learn that God and family come first!

Moreover, it is only together in Christ do they stand a chance at thwarting the malicious Master Daniel Cole, a conniving businessman bent on the destruction of the Morgan family and the usurping of their business holdings. This book is a cliffhanger, like the first volume in this series!

The only quibble that I have is that I was able to figure out some of the things that were going to happen ahead of time. I usually don't like that. Jack Cavanaugh's first volume (The Puritans) was one of the best books I have ever read, and it held me in suspense until the last page.

But this is a worthy successor to that epochal first book. I found it to be richly satisfying, and now I eagerly await the chance I will have to read volume three, The Patriots.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Colonists (American Family Portrait, Book 2), January 8, 2002

This review is from: The Colonists (American Family Portraits #2) (Paperback)
The Morgan family continues to endure hardships and learn about God's love in the American Colonies as the third generation steps out. After the death of their father Phillip, Priscilla, and Jared are all crossed by the evil Daniel Cole, who has the rest of Boston convinced that he is an honorable merchant.

It is so easy to be swept up in Cavanaugh's story. While reading an enjoyable novel you are able to learn a lot about the history of our beautiful country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great storytelling!, July 5, 2001
This review is from: The Colonists (American Family Portraits #2) (Paperback)
This was a very good story, with the same elements that are in the rest of the books in this series: adventure, emotion, romance, Christian values, drama, history, and even a little humor!

Three siblings take off in different directions--one to the high seas of pirates, one to an indian village, and one stays home but causes quite a stir among peole. Great storytelling with the same historical detail and life that's in the whole series!
