Review

From Doody’s Book Review Service, October 9, 2007
**Description**
This concise atlas integrates clinical dermatology and dermatopathology,
covering the gamut of skin disease including inflammatory, neoplastic, and
congenital. Chapters use an outline format with numerous tables, followed by
photographs of clinical lesions and photomicrographs of the histologic features
of the lesions.
**Purpose**
The goal is to pair clinical and histologic photographs with text to improve the
understanding of clinicopathologic correlation. This ultimately aids in
differential diagnoses, a worthy objective.
**Audience**
Targeted at both dermatologists and pathologists, this book would be useful at
many levels of training. It would be valuable to residents as a reference and
as a study tool for board examinations as well as to practitioners of
dermatology, pathology, and dermatopathology as a ready reference for both
clinical and histopathologic information. The author is well known in the field
and the contributors are credible authorities.
**Features**
The book focuses on the most important points of the diseases included. It is
not meant to be an exhaustive text on the subject, but rather a reference
integrating clinical and pathologic features in dermatopathology. Because of
the many authors, it is not surprising that chapters vary in style and quality,
but the subject areas are well covered. Some chapters are very thorough, such
as the ones on benign melanocytic nevi and cutaneous vasculitis. The numerous
tables are helpful and the illustrations are good to excellent. A few of the
low power photographs are pale and difficult to see. The location of the
photographs following the text may be a disadvantage, forcing readers to flip
back and forth.
**Assessment**
This is a high quality atlas. Most books on this subject are rather lengthy, and
there are few similar concise books with which to compare this one, other than
Practical Dermatopathology, by Rapini (Elsevier, 2005), which is an excellent concise text, but does not include the extensive clinical photographs.

Weighted Numerical Score: 98 - 5 Stars!
