Book Description

This brilliant pocket guide helps you to grasp the connection between three-dimensional organ systems and their two-dimensional representation in ultrasound imaging. Through dynamic illustrations and clarifying text, it allows you to:

- Recognize, name, and confidently locate all organs, landmarks, and anatomical details of the abdomen

-Examine all standard planes, including transverse and longitudinal scans for regions of sonographic interest (including the thyroid gland)

- Understand topographic relationships of organs and structures in all three spatial planes

This invaluable text is ideal for the beginner, providing a rapid orientation to all key topics. It includes:

- Over 250 fully labeled image quartets, each showing: the preferred location of the transducer on the body; the resulting image; a labeled drawing of the image, keyed to anatomic structures; and a small 3-D drawing showing the location of the scanning plane in the organ.

- Body markers with information on transducer handling and positioning for each sonogram

- Over 250 rules of thumb and key concepts

- All relevant landmarks, measurable parameters, and normal values

Packed with beautiful graphics and precise text, this is the essential resource that anyone involved in ultrasound radiography needs.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What initially makes the book especially attractive is its practical presentation. It is a paperback "flexibook" which constitutes a genuine pocket guide and its design is well adapted: for each organ, ultrasound images are showed on the left-hand page with the corresponding colored explanatory drawings on the right-hand page. These illustrations are accompanied by small drawings demonstrating the location of the transducer on the body and a 3D diagram showing the location of the scanning plane in the organ. The ultrasound images are numerous, all of high quality, and the drawings very clear and pedagogical. In addition, the normal sonographic dimensions of the organs presented in this book are summed up on the fold-out flap inside the front and the back cover, which is very easy-to-use. To conclude, this pleasant, brilliant, richly colored, and well-presented pocket guide is of the greatest interest for learning (and revising) the ultrasound anatomy of the abdomen and the thyroid gland. As a result, it will be of use to the beginners in sonography as well as more experienced radiologists and other physicians dealing with this field of imaging."--Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy

"A useful book for beginning sonographers, those preparing for examinations and those involved in teaching student sonographers in the area of abdominal sonography."--ASUM Ultrasound Bulletin

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST Have for ultrasound student, October 24, 2004
By
This review is from: Color Atlas of Ultrasound Anatomy (Flexibook) (Paperback)
This book will make imaging clear to you! The pictures are great, the keys are great, and the positioning is very clear. I am a first year first semester u/s student and I UNDERSTAND my images now that I have this book. It includes longitudinal & transverse cross sections. A MUST have book and will be great to keep in your pocket as a reference when you start scanning.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing & inaccurate key, February 3, 2007
By
This review is from: Color Atlas of Ultrasound Anatomy (Flexibook) (Paperback)
I am totally disappointed in the purchase of this book. I needed a guide to help me with anatomy & location of landmarks while scanning. I come from a nonmedical background so have been playing catch-up to the other students in my ultrasound program. The book is confusing with no guide to tell you how to use it. The key to the scans for the identity of specific parts/organs should be on the same page--not in some distant location where you have to keep flipping back & forth everytime you need to identify something. But, worst of all, is that the information given is incorrect.
Yes, the actual US images are good--but since they are mislabeled, it is confusing & hurts the sonographer instead of educating them. I went to several sonographers, as well as the head of my program, & asked them to look at the book. I doubted myself when I saw mislabeled areas in the key for the scans. The incorrect labeling is present throughout the book. Everyone confirmed that the key was grossly inaccurate &, even it that hadn't been the case, was very hard to follow because of where the editor chose to put the key & with no instructions on how to use it.
For a student on an extremely limited budget, this was a waste of money for me. No longer will I buy a book unless I can actually browse through it to see if the facts are correct. In order to get any use out of this book, I'll have to go to other textbooks & sonographers so I can hand label CORRECTLY the areas on the scans. The problem is, I was relying on this book to provide that information for me instead of vice versa!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most helpful books for a junior radiology resident, March 20, 2006

This review is from: Color Atlas of Ultrasound Anatomy (Flexibook) (Paperback)
The challenges that a person faces as a junior radiology resident can be intimidating. This book will be beneficial to a budding sonographer earlier in the educational process, also. Ultrasound is a skill that has a high learning curve but this book truly levels the playing field. Organized by Organs and vascular structures, this book is an essential book in your library.

Transducer placement and corresponding sonographic anatomy is outlined in a clear and concise format. Vascular anatomy is well illustrated. The quality of images is excellent and is cross referenced with a schematic image.

My major criticism is outlining the keys to anatomy at the start of the chapter, as opposed to being key on its respective page. However, this does not detract from this books utility.

I highly recommend this book.
